Fire captain urges locals to be on high fire alert

JUST days after one of the biggest fires the region has seen, Swan Hill’s CFA brigade is preparing for more hazardous weather conditions anticipated this weekend.

The weekend is expected to see 43 degree temperatures, thunder storms and strong winds.

It follows a major grass-fire on Monday near Kangaroo Lake and Lake Charm that threatened homes and took up to four hours to control.

Brigade captain Nipper Turner said residents and campers should be aware of the fire alerts in their area from Friday onwards.

“There will be some strong winds about and an elevated risk of thunderstorms,” Mr Turner said.

“You’ve only got to see where that fire took place at Lake Charm and then look around you to see that everything’s dry and ready to go.”

The local CFA branch has responded to 156 calls to emergencies this year.
