Colourful way to run

A BLEND of bright colours will dust the streets — and those participating — in Swan Hill’s first ever Colour Your Run on October 19.

The event will celebrate community and encourage people of different ages and cultural backgrounds to come together for a day of fun.

Similar to the popular Colour Run, the event will see participants wear white t-shirts. They will be showered in coloured powder at various check points, with proceeds going towards local support group Women Touched by Cancer.

Organised by students studying a Diploma of Community Services Work at Sunraysia TAFE in Swan Hill, since the event was first announced at the beginning of April it has garnered a significant amount of interest.

“There is nothing like it for rural communities, so it is the very first of its kind,” student Georga Clarke said.

“We were really surprised at how much interest we received — we got more than 1000 likes [on the Facebook page] in less than 24 hours — it was ridiculous.”

“We thought we would have a little school project, but now it has turned into something massive.”

The event will form part of the students curriculum, fitting in with studies that look at groups within the community and how they interact.

The group wants the event to be sustainable, and plans to look into ways to keep the event going if it is a success this year.

“We are really trying to encourage everyone to get involved — families, businesses in the wider community to become involved — and give a sense that we can do good things together,” student Jan Scott said.

“We want to encourage people to interact and make the most of our facilities and make the most of what we have in the community.”

The group is currently looking for sponsors for the event.

Donations of all kinds — not just the monetary — are welcome.

Registration for the event will open in May.
