ROUND seven of tennis pennant threw up the closest contests for the season, with all teams creating chances through the day’s play.
With teams having less substitutes playing, it’s clear that the original rankings were pretty much on the mark.
Curlewis and Splatt battled out the closest result, with Curlewis finishing in front by just two games.
Splatt will feel hard-done by, as it won three extra sets, but still missed out on the premiership points.
Splatt’s men gave the side a handy lead, with Brett Pekin and Glenn McKissack both winning three, and Christian Starrs, Ken Grisdale, Colin Free and Tim Croft all saluting in two sets.
Trevor Lewin was a star for Curlewis with three wins.
Curlewis retrieved seven games in the women’s sets, where Teagan Mays ran amuck, with three strong wins.
Angela Smith won two for Splatt, as did Karen McKissack and Lisa Pekin.
Curlewis came home with a powerful effort in the mixed, where Cooper Angus and Melissa Snyder, and Trevor Lewin and Mays scored big wins.
Splatt’s Colin Free and Karen McKissack and Croft and Lisa Pekin won, but narrowly, and were not able to catch up on games.
Campbell won its first match for the year, after going close on several occasions.
It won in the women’s and mixed sets, to finish level on sets, and up by four games over Beveridge.
In a reduced format match, Gray scored an eight game win over McCrae, while McCallum — stung by its loss last week — came out with determination and scored a 15 game win over Stradbroke.
McCallum retained top spot, and McCrae won just enough sets to stay in second place.
Gray and Stradbroke are neck and neck in the battle for third.
Curlewis is fifth, and Beveridge and Splatt are locked together on 65 points in their contest for sixth place.
Campbell remains last, but its good win on Saturday gives promise that it has the potential to climb the ladder fast.
