Regional distinction

A NORTH Central team made up entirely of Nyah Two Bays Swan Hill swimmers represented the region with distinction at the Victorian 7-10 year-old Country Championships in Melbourne earlier this month.

Club spokesperson Jamie King said the overall result — an overall fourth place out of nine districts — was laudable for the region.

“It’s a fantastic effort considering the strength and size of the other districts being represented,” he said.

He said coaches Shirley Swan and Sue Sambrooks were rightly proud of the young swimmers’ efforts, especially those competing in a big meet for the first time.

Individual placegetters were: Nick Hodgson (second, 10 and under backstroke and breaststroke), Emily Kearns (second, 10 and under back and free), Charlie Hickox (third, eight and under back) and Wilhelm Hawkins (second, seven and under back).

Relay placegetters were: boys’ 10 and under (third, freestyle and medley), girls’ eight and under (second, free) and mixed seven and under (second, free).

“A number of other team members performed well which saw them finish in the top 10 in their events for country Victoria and these performances were rewarded with acknowledgment patches,” King said.

“Thanks should also be given to the older children of the club who attended on the day helping with organising, warm ups and words of encouragement for their younger team mates.”

The club’s focus now shifts to the first locally-run meet of the year.

The Southern Mallee Championships will be held at the Swan Hill Outdoor Pool on December 7 and 8.

“This is the club’s big meet for the year and sees teams from as far away as Mildura and Broken Hill travelling to compete,” King said.

Anyone wanting to get involved in the club is welcomed, with training held at the leisure centre every night of the week from 5.30pm and morning sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 6am.
