Girls battle in opening round of the Central Victoria Football League’s girls competition

GIRLS football kicked off in a big way on Sunday morning, with four teams battling it out in the opening round of the Central Victoria Football League’s girls competition.

Swan Hill, Woorinen, Tyntynder and Birchip were in action in the league’s first hit-outs, in both under-12 and under-15 competitions, while the Warra Blues started the year with a bye.

The football drew a good crowd, as under-12’s played a small-sided game of two halves, and the under-15’s played on the smaller of Woorinen Recreation Reserve’s two ovals.

Tyntynder claimed the win over the host side in the under-15 game, while Swan Hill defeated Birchip-Watchem.

Under-12 players thrived in the unofficial competition, with the main goal of the age group to have fun and have a kick around.

Incredible sportsmanship was on full display throughout the morning, as team’s shared players to ensure each team had even numbers.

Central Rivers league’s manager Jessie Chester said she was excited to see the strength of girl’s football in the Swan Hill region.

“It has been great to get girls footy back up and running again for 2024,” she said.

“We are continually seeing the growth and interest in the sport, so it’s been incredible to see this reflected on the park on Sunday.

“With four rounds to go, it would be great to see even more girls get down and register to play with a club.

“There’s a really fun buzz in the air with girls footy back and thriving.”

Round two of the girl’s competition will take place at Tyntynder’s Alan Garden Reserve this Friday night, starting from 6pm as the Warra Blues take part in their first match of the season.
