Good start for Blues’ 15s

AFTER strong starts to the season, Kerang’s 15 and under and 15 and under reserve sides sit third and second on the ladder respectively.

Like most clubs, the Blues have had the teams training together, although they’re largely settled now, according to 15 reserves coach Vicky McDonald.

“We’ve tried to even them out a bit. Once they’ve played five games in the under 15s they can’t go back in, so that makes it hard a bit,” she said.

The reserves side had a strong win over Nyah Nyah West United on Saturday, 35 goals to 22.

Cate Short was best on court for the Blues, and has been one of Kerang’s more important players this year according to McDonald.

“Our goalies are really strong, in Jorja ((McDonald)) and Cate, also with Lauren Adams in the centre, her direction down the court is really good,” she said.

McDonald said that while Saturday’s win over United had been reasonably convincing, other games this year had been closer.

“We’ve had tough games, lost by one, won by one,” she said.

“The competition is pretty even this year.”

McDonald said the 15 and under reserve was a fun team to coach.

“They’re a great bunch of girls, they’re eager to get out on the court and they’re willing to learn,” she said.

As well as McDonald, Chelsea Casey is team manager for the 15 and under reserves, while Renae Hipworth is coaching the 15 and under.

“It’s all working really well. It’s a good role for Chelsea, now that she’s a senior player, she’s a good role model for our younger girls,” McDonald said.
