Horses bolt for freedom

A GREAT escape by two horses in Swan Hill yesterday came to an end in the local
cemetery.

Council rangers were called to contain two thoroughbred horses
spotted trotting up Coronation Avenue after they escaped from a nearby property
around midday.

Local horse trainer Austey Coffey said he was contacted by
rangers to retrieve the family pets, who had wandered into the cemetery after
inspecting a few front lawns across the road.

“I think they presumed they’d
be my horses dusted loose from the racecourse,” Mr Coffey said.

“They were
picked up as soon as we got them back to our place.”

Owner Mark Dacey said he
was relieved to have the recently-purchased horses, who are yet to be named,
home safely and without injury.

“They broke through the fence, so they must
have been spooked in the paddock,” he said.

Until council rangers arrived at
the scene, the horses appeared to be making a beeline for the local race track.
