NYAH and Nyah West are set to receive a revitalising boost if plans to develop a train service come to fruition.
Past president of the Woorinen District Progress Association Barry Teal, has been working with groups from across the region to set the wheels of progress in motion. Those wheels will be in the form of a steam train that will bring the train tracks from Nyah, Nyah West, Woorinen, Piangil and Lake Boga back to life.
A short chat with locals about Nyah West’s history reveals an endless string of stories of survival, economic boom and difficulty and an overriding sense of pride.
The towns still boast a combined population of 1150 people and aim to remain viable well into the future.
Barry Teal set about working with locals to identify the community assets, known as a comparative advantage. He presented his belief that Nyah and Nyah West were great representations of a classic Mallee town of the inter war period.
“It is a rare comparative advantage,” Mr Teal said.
