The carnival is over

THE FINAL Swan Hill Eisteddfod finished up on Wednesday, with emotions running high during the week.

Throughout the event, participants who had frequented the eisteddfod over the years went up to event coordinators to express their gratitude for the way it has been run over the years and disappointment that it was closing down.

On the opening day last Thursday, Mayor Michael Adamson opened the eisteddfod with a speech ruing the loss of an event that has done so much for the Swan Hill community.

On Sunday, eisteddfod dance coordinator Barb Uebergang, who is seldom lost for words, struggled to finish an emotional speech at the close of the dance section, her daughter coming on-stage to help her out.

Music co-ordinator Sue Turner said the Sunday night dance finale was poignant, but she was also provided with a bit of perspective too.

“It was very emotional, we had a lot of tears and hugs,” she said.

“Our adjudicator, who does eisteddfods all around Australia, says they’re finishing up all over the place.”
