Motocross success

SWAN Hill Motorcycle Club may seek to play host to the MX Nationals a third time, after more than 2300 people braved cold conditions for Round 6 at Chisholm Reserve on Sunday.

Despite temperatures only reaching 14C, the 2014 Australian Motocross Championship round in Swan Hill managed to draw larger crowds than last year.

Club president Dean Rickard said although the cool weather had probably kept a few people away, it was good to see the event draw a big crowd.

“The forecast for [Sunday] was actually worse than it was in the end,” Mr Rickard said.

“The event went off awesome, it was unreal — the riders were really happy with the track.”

Trudy Symes of Lascelles headed to Chisholm Reserve with her children, Cooper and Jada, on Sunday to give the kids a chance to “see something different that they don’t get to see any other time”.

“I brought the kids out to have a look at the motorbikes and they are loving it, it has been awesome,” Ms Symes said.

She added that events that draw large crowds had flow on benefits to the whole region.

“I think it is fantastic, the more the better for everyone really — for the whole community… it is just a boost to the economy.”

The gate takings from the day will go back to the club, and are still being tallied.

“Mainly we are looking at building a new clubhouse, sign on room, first aid room and track upgrades, so it will just go back into making the facilities better so we can continue to host events out there,” Mr Rickard said.

“With all that is going on at Chisholm Reserve the more that we can enhance what we can do out there the better.”

It is the second time the club has hosted the event, and they may seek to host it a third time.

“We will see what is happening, we have a meeting this week and we will sit down and see where we stand and what the club wants to do,” Mr Rickard said.
