Deliberately lit: Temperatures soar as suspicious fire on Pental Island destroys caravan

A CARAVAN was destroyed and about 1.3 hectares of public land was burnt in a “suspicious” fire on Pental Island earlier this week.

While there were no injuries, fire authorities were required to supervise the area for more than 72 hours as Monday’s 39C scorcher — a day of total fire ban — threatened to re-ignite the area.

Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) fire incident controller Andy Koren said the fire appeared to start near a caravan on Jones Road which runs alongside the Little Murray River.
