THE public display of All Star Sprint Cars on the lawns near the clock tower on Saturday morning helped bring a great crowd out to the Sonic Speedway that night.
Over 2000 spectators watched Sprint Car action for the first time in 10 years, with three heats for each of the 30 competitors.
The finals started with a B main, and the top six finishers started in the A main.
With 20 sprinters in the final it was thrilling viewing these professional drivers with such powerful vehicles doing what they do best, Speedway’s David Daly said.
“The first race meeting of the season is always interesting to see the changes made by drivers and mechanics during the break,” he said.
“Our support classes, the Street Stocks and Standard Saloons were not disappointing, to see what our local drivers should bring to racing in the new season.”
Daly said Joel Carmichael will be the man to watch this year in this class as he was very fast with Leighton Warburton chasing him, and Claude Pearson not far behind.
He said the Street Stocks class saw Andrew Carmichael race up against 3 Litre and Modified Production cars, and he showed how a 12 month break from racing did him good.
The next event out at the speedway will be a Standard Saloon feature on December 28.
