Nyah’s batsmen dig their heels in

A TOP class batting performance has handed Nyah District a victory on the second day of their clash with Woorinen.

At the end of the day it was the top order who did the damage, with third man Jacob Lister punishing the bowlers on his way to 60 runs at the end of the match.

With a target of just 113, Nyah District easily chased down the target to rack up a total of 129 runs of their own after 46 overs — just two wickets down.

The strong performance has added to the woes of Woorinen who have been struggling to score runs during their matches so far this season.

Woorinen captain Glenn Violi said his side let the pressure off at crucial stages in the match.

“We are a little bit disappointed we couldn’t take the wickets and make it a bit more of a game and they played pretty well,” he said.

“They got off to a pretty good start and our plan was to put pressure on them and keep it tight.

“They hit some bad balls early and got off to a flyer, which didn’t help us. I think we bowled okay, but overall it was them playing a bit too well and we probably had the one bad ball an over and they put it away.”

Woorinen are locked in a battle with Ultima TUF at the bottom of the ladder, and Violi said there was one key issue with their performances.

“Our bowling has been good this season but it is the batting that has let us down,” he said.

“We need to score more than 115 runs and score them well and put pressure on other sides — and if we do that we should be fine.”

Nyah District’s batsmen dug their heels in during the second day of the match, only losing two wickets.

The side showed patience and captain Joel Walsh said it was the partnerships that were key.

“We went out to bat and we got the win, I was happy with how we formed good partnerships and it got us over the line, we batted very well,” he said.

“Once we got our eye in, the runs just started flowing. They bowled fairly well and made the batsmen work for it — we just put in a great performance on the whole.”

Over at Swan Hill Showgrounds, St Mary’s Tyntynder have moved to the Swan Hill and District Cricket Association summit after beating Swan Hill.

The grand finalists were able to set good targets with the bat, while also finding the wickets they needed to put the pressure on Swan Hill.

And in the final match of the round, RSL beat Ultima TUF outright at Alan Garden Reserve.

The comprehensive win was a big blow for the cellar dwellers who were unable to compete with the defending premiers.
