Heart set on accounting

SWAN Hill financial organisations are tackling skill shortages head-on with a
unique program which aims to entice local students to consider a career within
the finance sector.

Now in its fifth year, the Set Your Heart On A Career In
Accounting program provides an opportunity for students to complete work
experience at a local financial organisation.

Last week 14 students
participated in the program, gaining an insight into the financial
world.

Adam Laughlin of Poole and Associates Pty Ltd said they hosted seven
students during the four-day program.

“It was all hands-on,” Mr Laughlin
said.

“There was no filing or stapling.”

Throughout the week the Year 10
and 11 students worked on activity statements, financial reports and tax returns
for dummy clients and at the end of the week were required to provide a mock
presentation with the data.

Since the program first commenced, statistics
have revealed 12 students who participated in the program have gone on to pursue
a career within the field.

Year 12 student Kasey Wilson is one of those
success stories.
