ALMOST broke a month ago, the Balranald Men’s Shed has boosted productivity with
cash grants, and further extensions are planned.
The men received two grants
worth a total of $35,000 earlier this year, which will be used to buy more
equipment and build a painting room.
The extra room, 20 by 10 metres at the
rear of the building, would also allow for welding and storing of steel and
wood.
But Men’s Shed president Greg McIvor said there was much more in store
for the former Telstra building.
“What we want to do is put an old railway
carriage out the front and put all our timber in it, but it’s not possible with
renovations for the [adjacent] information centre,” Mr McIvor said.
“We want
to install cladding over the louvres, it gets quite hot in here.”
The former
truck driver and plumber said there were a range of ages among the 25 men who
had signed up get their hands dirty.
“There’s one in his 30s, most of us are
in our late 50s, to 83, our eldest.”
