Author drops-in to Robinvale

THE Robinvale Library is gearing up for a feel-good, laugh-out-loud literary afternoon with the launch of What Did I Miss?, the debut romantic comedy from award-winning author Holly Brunnbauer.

The event promises to bring charm, wit, and heartfelt storytelling to the heart of the community, as Brunnbauer connects with readers and shares the story behind her much-anticipated novel.

“It’s a fresh and feisty romantic comedy about what happens when you meet someone special before truly knowing yourself,” Brunnbauer said.

“Expect big laughs and even bigger feels.”

Inspired by a friend who found herself newly single after a high-school marriage gone wrong, Brunnbauer said the idea of starting over in adulthood; especially in the world of modern dating, was ripe for both chaos and comedy.

“I thought it’d be fun to explore that mix of chaos, confidence, and cringe that comes with starting over, especially when you’re still figuring out who you really are,” Brunnbauer said.

Readers have already taken notice.

What Did I Miss? was shortlisted for three national writing awards before publication and was released by HarperCollins in July 2025.

The launch will include a Q&A session with Brunnbauer, afternoon tea, book sales, and signing opportunities.

Readers will also get a glimpse into her journey from teacher to published author; a path that, like her characters, involves bold choices and zero regrets.

“Teaching was my ‘be-a-responsible-adult’ phase,” Brunnbauer said.

“Then came motherhood, and with it, the desperate need for grown-up conversation and connection, so I stumbled into blogging.

“That’s where I discovered my voice.”

“Writing fiction? That started on a total whim.

“I made a New Year’s Day resolution to write a book (because why not?). Plot twist: I actually did it. Now I’m a published author.”

Now living in rural Victoria with her husband, two sons, and a cheeky pug named Mr Giuseppe (to whom the book is dedicated), Brunnbauer said her country lifestyle fuels her creativity.

“Silence is my secret weapon, and out here in the country, I’ve got it in spades,” she said.

“No honking horns, no shouting neighbours; just birds, breeze, and the occasional sheep.

“It’s the perfect backdrop for getting lost in my fictional worlds.”

And while she’s busy promoting What Did I Miss?, there are already hints of more books on the horizon.

“I’ve definitely got more tricks up my sleeve and every intention to keep writing as long as it keeps feeling fun,” she said.

“If I’m lucky enough to get another shot, you can bet it’ll be something full of heart, humour, and a healthy dose of hijinks.”

Her advice to other aspiring rural writers?

“One of the best things about writing is the community, and you don’t have to live in a big city to find it.

“I started connecting with other writers online through courses, library events, writing organisations, and social media.

“If you’re in a rural area, don’t let distance hold you back. Writing might be a solo act, but you’ll never be in it alone.”

Robinvale libraries manager Camille Cullinan said the library is proud to host an author whose voice is both refreshing and authentic.

“Holly’s debut showcases her talent for stories full of heart, humour, and hijinks,” Ms Cullinan said.

“We are excited to host her and share share this moment with our community.”

The launch event takes place on Tuesday, September 24, from 4pm to 5pm.

Though it is free to attend, bookings are essential.
