Pioneers squad to showcase talents

FANS travelling to Pyramid Hill’s pre-season practice match series this Saturday will have the opportunity to watch some of women’s football’s next generation of stars.

An intra-squad match between the Bendigo Pioneers under-18 girls will kick off the day of football and netball from 11.30am at Pyramid Hill’s Mitchell Park.

Club committee member Geoff Hickmott said the community was excited for the chance to see the young stars.

“This is our first go at having the girls down playing,” he said.

“Everyone that we speak to about it have said what a ripping idea it was. We’re really looking forward to having them involved.”

Golden Rivers teams Ultima and Wandella will take on Charlton and Wandella respectively, with a Central Murray match-up between Lake Boga and Woorinen to follow.

The headline match will see the host team take on North Central side Boort, with netball matches across the day.

Hickmott said fans would have the chance to check in on their health while taking in the sporting feast.

“This year we will be having a few different things,” he said.

“We will have, through support from Anglicare, a service called The Van at the ground, they work in mental health support, particularly for teenagers.

“Northern District Community Health will also be doing some things around farmers’ wellbeing, too. They’ll have people there ready to have a chat with anyone who would like to.

“There will also be a group there from a skin-testing organisation, they will be doing a selection of skin checks for people.

“A lot of the people at the club are farmers, the wives of farmers or tradies who work outdoors, so we just thought we’d just add a few different things to the program.”

Entry to the event is by gold coin donation, which the club will be donating directly to the Pyramid Hill fire brigade.
