Yabbies, ducks ready to race

Easter yabby races

THIS is always a big event for our town, as well as the Moulamein Preschool.

This great event will be happening at Moulamein Heritage Village this year.

It will have all of the usual stalls and attractions and will be followed up by the Moulamein Angling Club’s duck race at 2pm in the Billabong Creek.

Cost is $2 for a duck to win a possible $500, $200, $100 for the first three places as well as plenty of random draws.

And do not worry, if your duck comes last, you get a prize from Aspire Jewellery.

Then on Sunday, the Moulamein Angling Club will be holding its annual Easter Sunday fishing competition.

This will run from 10am until 3pm. There is a senior section, junior section as well as a sub-junior section.

It will cost $10 for adults and $5 for children to enter and you get a barbecue lunch cooked by Brendon for that and drinks are available, as well as plenty of fun and raffles.

Protect your patch

NATURAL disaster preparation workshops will be held in the district during the next couple of months.

If you did not think you were prepared enough for the recent floods, or are worried about fires or storms, this could be a good day to go to.

They will be held in Moulamein on March 22, from 9am till 3pm, Tooleybuc on March 27, 9am till 3pm, Mallan on April 29, 3pm till 9pm, Caldwell on April 30, 9am till 3pm, Cobramunga on May 1, 9am till 3pm, and Wakool on May 2, 9am till 3pm.

Let’s hope we never need this information, but it is there if you need it.

Rice harvest begins

THE early birds were knocking on Hooker’s door and rice harvest has officially started with a whimper this week.

With the hot weather we have being having, it will go from a whimper to full-on very quickly.

I do not think Hooker will be playing bowls in our Easter tournament.

He will be too busy trying to fit as many trucks through per day to keep his farmers happy.

The early crop that is being harvested is going well, as we all hope the rest of the harvest does.

Easter bowls tournament

JUST another plug for our 2024 Easter bowls tournament. We have changed the format just a little bit this year.

The William Houghton Memorial on Good Friday is a 2-4-2 Pairs any combination, starting at noon and you get smoko.

On Saturday, we have the Don Mertz Memorial 3 Bowls Pairs any combination. This re-arranged event will start at 9.30am.

You will get lunch and smoko at this event. Depending on numbers, there could be as much as $1800 in prize money up for grabs during the weekend.

Friday night there will be live music, Easter bunny, Easter egg hunt and seafood prizes available in our meat raffle.

If things go according to plan, there will also be live music on Saturday night.

For more information and to book in, call Kerryn on 0407 800 111 for the bowls, or the bowling club on 5887 5207 for any other information.

River levels

THE Edward River has continued to drop slightly but there is about 1700 megalitres below Stevens Weir.

Depending on how much our farmers are using, that should arrive about Easter. Great for our visitors.

At the moment, we are about 750 megalitres a day and around 1.1m.

The Billabong will not be there to top the flows up as demand for water is reaching supply.
