Bowls notes

Murray Downs

SOCIAL bowls last Thursday was won by Glenn McIntosh (Racecourse) and Mary Johnson. Well done to both.

The lucky number jackpot was mounting this week, looking for some lucky person.

Members on duty next week are Bernadette and Josie.

The Champion of Champions event was played last Saturday and Lisa and Josh are into the finals.

Unfortunately, due to the inclement weather on Sunday, these matches could not be finalised. A date is yet to be decided.

The final of the Murray Valley Over 60 Mixed Fours Championship was played on Thursday, January 4. Congratulations to Buck, Matt, Ceil and Josie, who defeated a Racecourse team in a very close finish.

They will now go on to play in the regional event in March.

Murray Downs are holding a tournament Saturday, January 13 at 12.30pm. This will comprise three games of eight ends.

Entries should go to Dawne Holland on 0402 020 996 by 5pm Friday 12th.

Come along and have an enjoyable day out before Saturday Pennant resumes next weekend.

Swan Hill

THE weather is a big factor in sporting conditions.

The rain poured down Saturday night and Sunday morning, resulting in the Champion of Champions event at Swan Hill Bowls Club last weekend being incomplete on Sunday.

Saturday’s matches were all played, with some excellent games.

Well done to our two champions. Judy Husson defeated Sheena Coe in the first round, proceeding to the semi-final, just missing out by three shots against Lake Boga’s Helen Jobling.

Glen Evans defeated Nyah’s Rex Howard and will play Ken Hamill from Lake Boga in the semi-final on the rescheduled date, Sunday February 18, at Swan Hill Bowls Club.

Again, a forecast temperature of 37 degrees means the weather could be a deciding factor as to whether Friday Frolic goes ahead Friday February 12 at 3pm. It will go ahead if people turn up to play and all are welcome. Enter by 2.30pm.

Mick’s raffles will be a goer as he will have the meat trays ordered, along with other prizes. Cool drinks will be available at happy hour prices, so come along and enjoy the social activities in the clubhouse.

Last Friday several visitors from Geelong and bowlers from Lake Boga and Racecourse enjoyed a game of bowls and the activities that followed in the club.

Classic on the Murray Two-Bowl Triples will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, February 21 and 22. Entries are now coming in. Contact Mick Balchin on 0428 553 913 or Bill King on 0428 324 083 to put your entry in.

Midweek Pennant restarts on Tuesday. Call Lynda King on 0447 324 083 if unavailable or indicate this on the noticeboard.

The Division 1 team plays at Racecourse against Racecourse 2 and Division 2 plays Manangatang away.

Saturday Pennant will resume on January 20. With any queries, call Bill King, 0428 324 083, or check the pennant sheet at the club.

Swan Hill bowlers extend their sympathy to Betty Bombadieri’s family on her recent passing.

Betty played bowls at Swan Hill after retiring to Swan Hill from Lake Boga. She was an active member, playing pennant and social bowls.

Lake Boga

HUMID conditions greeted players at social bowls on Wednesday morning. The winners were Les Grey, Bones Smith and Marie O’Meara with two wins and plus eight.

In second place were Keith Anderson, Jean Leach and Barrie Free with a draw and a win with a score of plus four.

Congratulations to Ken Hamill and Helen Jobling for winning positions in the finals of the club single association bowls championships. We wish them the best of luck in the grand finals.

There will be a working bee at the club starting at 8am Friday and the next club meeting will be Wednesday, January 17.

Teams for next week’s Midweek Pennant are Division 1 at home to Murray Downs 1, Robyn Jolley, Marie O’Meara, David Condy, Helen Jobling, Janet Hamill, Ken Hamill, Salley Meehan and Max Parsons.

The Division 2 team, at home to Balranald, is Jean Leach, Peter Snell, Ray Leach, Laurel Dewhurst, Jill Pye, Ron Atkinson, Noel Hender and Barbara Davies.

Entries are being taken for the Australia Day weekend tournament on Sunday, January 28. Two-bowl any-combination triples start with a sausage sizzle before a 5pm start.

Entries to Ken 0408 591 256, Danny 0447 845 975 or Rod 0447 382 007.
