MURRAY Downs stretched their winning streak to seven straight victories, defeating fellow finals aspirant Moulamein by 20 shots on Friday evening.
The reigning premiers proved too strong for a gallant Moulamein, who had to be content with just the one match point after Dennis Compton and Josh Thornton’s teams played out a 20-all draw on rink two.
That result was as close as the visitors would get, Aaron Worboyes and Martin Stephens succumbing to Murray Downs’ Brian Lehmann and John Caldwell by 10 shots on their respective rinks.
The Rams remained second and Moulamein third on the MVPA weekend pennant ladder, after ladder leaders Racecourse secured a 17-shot win over fourth-placed Lake Boga on Saturday.
Racecourse didn’t have everything their own way, the Lake Boga combination of Ken Hamill, Ian Ross, Ron Atkinson and John McCormack securing a four-shot win over Glenn McKissack’s team.
However, Racecourse’s Glenn McIntosh defeated Lake Boga’s Daniel Kelly 22-19, helping cancel out the visitors’ advantage.
The difference was on the final rink, where Racecourse’s Norm Smith dominated proceedings against Peter Philp, producing an 18-shot victory, 33-15.
Swan Hill managed to close the gap to the top four with a 22-shot win over Nyah District.
Just two shots separated the teams on rinks two and three, with Swan Hill’s Glenn Evans defeating Rex Howard 24-22 and Nyah District’s Kent Coburn defeating Greg Scandolera by the same score.
Proving the difference, Swan Hill’s Gary McGrath, Owen Lewis, Michael Balchin and Bill King dominated the Demons’ Bryan Smith with a 37-15 victory, giving Swan Hill an 83-61 win overall.
