Hunters under watch

Melbourne Cup weekend

LIKE I said, our hunters will be checked out by the Department of Primary Industries.

We got the call on Sunday morning. “Can we come onto your property to check your hunters out?”

What can you say? I asked last year what would happen if I said “no”. They sort of shrugged their shoulders. I assumed they meant they would come in anyway.

All of the hunters I have talked to have said they were very polite and as long as their paperwork was up to date, they were okay.

The DPI will be back most weekends, is my guess.

Please tell your hunters to do the right thing and have your licence up-to-date for shooting ducks.

If we do the right thing, and our hunters do the right thing, then no problem.

There are all kinds of advice on plenty of things that go wrong with women that are too numerous to mention.

They are back

BLOODY turbo chooks by the thousands. They were here in the floods and bred up. When our country dried up, they moved on to somewhere else. That place must be drying up as they are moving back here.

So far, they are 2-3km from our rice.

I have a plan. It worked a few years ago. I put a syphon hose over a bank from my rice to give them a turbo chook heaven, so they stayed there.

We will see how it goes this year. These mongrel things cannot be scared away, they are hard to kill with a shotgun.

They just keep coming like zombies.


Bowls season

DIVISION 1 team were playing for a spot at the top of the ladder.

Unfortunately, we played Murray Downs. They gave us a message that it is their spot, not ours.

But our Division 1 is giving the big boys a hard time and has not been at full strength yet.

Division 3 mob was playing for a spot in the four against Murray Downs as well. There was one end to go and we were three-up overall.

I walked up to my mate EJ who was playing 3rd in his rink.

“All you have to do is hold more than three,” I told him.

Was not good advice as I found out by his response.

“Don’t tell me that,” he said. “With the day I am having, that’s the last thing I need.”

Murray Downs managed three shots on the last end of the day to end in a draw.

Sorry EJ, I should not have mentioned the three shots.

This week, we are both home again. Division 1 is against our mates from Nyah. Division 3 is also at home to Racecourse.

Because both teams are at home, it is Division 1’s turn to bring the smoko.

If you want to see some good bowls played, wander over to Moulamein Bowling Club for a nice cold beer and check out the local talent.

River levels

THE Edward River has finally levelled off and is sitting at around 2300 megalitres per day and around 2.2 metres.

Fishing is still slow but the odd good one is getting caught.

There is still that much feed in our rivers that our fish do not have to chase a worm on a hook. The natural feed comes to them.
