THE Nyah District Primary School community is made up of students from around the region including Nyah, Nyah West, Vinifera, Wood Wood and Swan Hill.
They commute via a free bus service and take part in an array of educational activities such as art, cultural activities and sport.
Assistant principal Pam Paynter said the school valued the chance to interact with the wider community through these activities.
“These activities allow students to feel connected to their local community by building communication skills and awareness of others that live in the local area,” Ms Paynter said.
“The Mural Mob from the Swan Hill Specialist School is currently working on creating an indigenous mural at our school.
“All students will also have a part in creating the mural which tells the story of the Murray River.”
Throughout the year Nyah District Primary School has utilised sporting schools funding to run additional PE programs in basketball, gymnastics and swimming.
This funding provides the opportunity for students to access specialised coaches and allows the school to buy new equipment.
With both local and AFL footy finals currently happening, students have been involved in a footy/netball day with the Nyah Nyah West United Football Netball Club.
Jarrod Skinner and Billy Carpenteri visited the school to run a session of fun skills-based activities and games.
The school takes the opportunity to invite family into its community and will welcome grandparents to the annual Grandparents Day event in October.
“Nan, Pa, Grandma and Pop will be invited to take part in classroom activities by their grandchildren,” Ms Paynter said.
“No doubt there will be a few differences noticed from when they attended school many years ago.
“The Nyah District Primary School parent community will provide these special visitors with a tasty lunch of soup and sandwiches.”
Building on the students’ access to creative arts, grade 5 and 6 students will be working with the Nyah West Men’s Shed on a woodworking project.
This annual event will start in term four and Ms Paynter said it would be a great way to build mutually rewarding friendships.
