THE Woorinen women’s football team are certain there will be bigger things to come next season, after falling 17 points short of a maiden premiership on Friday night.
Castlemaine claimed consecutive premierships, and completed an undefeated season, under lights at the Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo.
The Tigers had opportunities to win but were unable to convert in front of goal, falling 5.2 (32) to 1.9 (15).
However, the Magpies were made aware they would likely have a significant challenger for their title next season, with Woorinen dominating large passages of play, particularly in the second and third terms.
With three more scoring shots than their opposition, it was the Tigers’ inability to convert in front of goal that will likely haunt them, with Donal Fellows the only goal scorer in the final game of their maiden season.
Coach Katelyn Hazlett led from the front, the inspirational leader willing her team forward from contest to contest in an attempt to get her side over the line.
Izabella Palmero also won plenty of contested ball in the midfield, while the lively Freda Wosomo gave Castlemaine headaches with her speed and outside run.
Sophie Peacock in defence, Tenay Fellows and Carlee Hazlett were also among Woorinen’s better players.
The club are still in the running to claim silverware this year, with their under-18 girls to play Golden Square this weekend in the Bendigo Junior Football League preliminary final.
The Tigers lost to White Hills by 14 points in Sunday’s second semi-final, but earned the double chance courtesy of a top-two finish.
Jenna Bannam, Sunny Barry, Issy Boulton and Aylah McLean all scored goals for the Tigers in the 6.8 (44) to 4.6 (30) loss, with McLean, Sophie McClelland, Gaby Sanford, Lauren Clarke and Lanie Somerville among Woorinen’s better players.
