OPENING day of Swan Hill Bowls Club’s 2024 bowls season will have extra meaning, with Australia’s veterans to be honoured.
The annual RSL Diggers’ Day tournament will be held on Sunday in conjunction with the first day of the bowls season.
Swan Hill Bowls Club president Mick Balchin said the club was proud to continue holding the tournament, which began in 2016.
“This tournament is one that was initially postponed, so we had to find another date to hold it,” he said.
“We knew that opening day for the 2023-24 season was coming up, so we decided to incorporate Diggers’ Day into that.
Mr Balchin said it was “really nice to be a part of” the event.
“Most of us are on the older side and it’s just a nice way to be able to give something back through the bowls club,” he said.
“It’s your ordinary sort of tournament, but the RSL sponsor the event and the proceeds of our raffle gets donated to Legacy.
“We’re really pleased with the support we receive from the RSL.”
The tournament’s format will be triples of any combination, with three games of 10 ends.
There will be prizemoney of $1000 on offer for first, second and third place, while the best winning team of each game will also receive money back.
Entry is $45 per team, or $15 for a single entry which includes afternoon tea, with bowlers asked to provide a plate of afternoon tea.
To enter, call Bill King on 0428 324 083, the bowls club on 5032 1772, or add names to the noticeboard sheet in the clubhouse.
