Morning Tea’s big milestone

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is celebrating its 30th anniversary and our region has begun the season of warm community gatherings in fine form.

The Swan Hill Visitor and Community Comfort Centre started the ball rolling with their event last Thursday, as more than 20 people joined Beryl Lowe and her group of volunteers.

Councillors Jacquie Kelly and Ann Young attended, representing Swan Hill Rural City Council to support the organisation in their fund raising efforts.

On Monday, it was the Lake Boga Community Committee’s turn with the Lake Boga Bowling Club donating use of their facilities to host the morning tea.

Trisha Pollard and Marie Dillion are on the committee and were pleased to see so many people arriving early.

“We have had all the morning tea items donated and we also have raffles and lucky door prizes to help raise funds.

“This is our 12th year running it,” Mrs Dillion said.

Bowling club president Grant Davies said that the club was more than happy to support the biggest morning tea.

“It’s a really great cause and we have great facilities here so the community may as well use them,” he said.

Well over 100 people turned up, with a line snaking its way out the clubs doors to have tea served from silver teapots, which are a tradition for this event.

Mrs Pollard said the local community was very supportive.

“Last year we raised close to a thousand dollars, times are tough but people are donating even if they can’t make it to the morning tea.

“There seems to be so many people in our community that have been touched by cancer so we are able to get a lot of community involvement.

“We just ask and people help, the Lake Boga community is really involved in helping each other.

“When we first started we hosted it as a high tea, however, it has grown well beyond that now.

“The silver teapots are a tradition that has carried over from the early days,” Mrs Pollard said.
