MURRAY DOWNS MENS
THE 2023 Swan Hill Wholesalers Premier League competition got under way on Sunday, with 10 teams consisting of six players each participating in the eagerly-awaited competition.
Sunday’s competition was a double-header, with the first two rounds being played.
In the first round, the Royal Goat Trackers scored 106, with Speedy Frame (37) and Tony Ford (36) leading the way, too good for The Birdies with 97.
The Quo Vadis Gladiators, with Sam Rovere (37) and Johnny Quo’s (36), had a good win over Royal Capri, while the all-women’s team Wannabees, led by Sue Davis (34) and Sheila Beard (32), beat the Presidents Cup team 94 to 92.
The Bushrangers beat last season’s premiers The Sticky Bandits, while in the final match, the Mavericks got home by a single point against The Mallee Bulls 101 to 100, with the Mavericks best served by Daniel Lavey (35) and James McLean (34).
In round 2, the Royal Goats (106) were too good for Royal Capri (91), while the Presidents Cup lost their second match, to the Birdies, another all-women’s team, 97 to 92.
The Quo Vadis Gladiators had a good weekend, defeating the Bandits 104 to 93, while the Bulls got on the winners board, defeating the Wannabees 100 to 94, with the Bushrangers (102) defeating the Mavericks 101.
The third round will be played on Saturday, May 13, with the Royal Goats up against the Presidents, Royal Capri playing the Bandits, Birdies against the Bulls, Gladiators versing the Mavericks and finally, the Wannabees playing the Bushrangers.
In the daily event, which was a Stableford competition, Brenton Gurnett (9) recorded the day’s best score of 38 points, to take out Division 1 ahead of Harry Simpson (7) with 37 points. Sam Rovere (16) was the best in Division 2 with 37 points, ahead of Tony Ford (15) on 36 points.
Division 3 was won by Geoff Frame (20) also with 37 points, ahead of Daniel Lavey (22) with 35 points.
On Saturday, the daily competition was the May monthly medal stroke event.
The May monthly medal was taken out by Jason Baird (13) with a net 67, which was four shots better than the next best score of 71 net, which was recorded by John Tripodi (18), who was the best in Division 2.
Runner-up in this division was James Downing (17) with a net 73, while Division 1 was taken out by Sean Baumgurtel (4) with net 72 ahead of Graeme Cox’s (6) net 73, while in Division 3, Rob West (25) won with a net 74 score over the unlucky Tom Wilkins (36), who finished with the same score.
Last Thursday’s competition was a Stableford event, played across two divisions, with the best score of the day being 39 points, which was recorded by David Bourne (24) and Shane Kelly (20), with Bourne coming out on top.
Division 1 went to Dion Carmichael (11) with 37 points ahead of Chris Merritt (12) on 36 points.
Bill Gurnett (35) led the ball rundown with his 37 points, which went down to scores of 35 points.
MURRAY DOWNS LADIES
THE May monthly medal and the first round of the Club Championships was on the agenda at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday.
Bev Holt was the recipient of the Medal with a score of 72 net from her 24 handicap, with this being Bev’s eighth medal from a golfing career that has spanned over 25 years.
Bev also won the B grade voucher from Chris Warburton (19) 75 net.
Olive Spitty (3) also scored 72 net, but the countback was not in her favour.
Her consolation prize was winning the A grade voucher, with her 25 putts the best result from the 68 participants.
In C grade, Jenny Lynas (30) 77 net and Jenice Krahnert (28) 79 net were successful, and the D grade winners were Lois Tippett (36) 35 points and Lyn Billing (36) 80 net.
Deryn Pinney, Lyn Merrett, Maralyn Morrison and Jude Simmonds were rewarded for accurate shots to the par 3s.
The leaders in the championship after the first round are Olive Spitty 75 and Lynne Bishop 91 in A grade, Bev Holt (94), Chris Warburton and Shelley Wilkins, both 96 in B grade, Jenny Lynas and Jenice Krahnert both 107 in C grade and Lois Tippett 110 and Lyn Billing 116 in D grade.
Jude Simmonds (21) 36 points led the field on Saturday, with Maralyn Morrison (26) 34 points and Mag Kiley (17) 32 points the next best, while Shelley Wilkins (18) 37 points and Sue Davis (24) 34 points were Sunday’s leaders.
LAKESIDE LADIES
WELL, what a day on the golf course, had to hold on tight to our clubs, hats and buggies.
Stableford was played, with Dee Free winning the day (29) with 29 points.
Runner-up was Mandy Auckland (23) with 23 points on countback from Laurel Dewhurst, with nearest the pins won by Dee Free (3rd and 7th) and Lois Heil (18th).
Gobblers were Laurel 8th and Jean Youl 4th.

MAY monthly medal on Wednesday.
