POLICE are trying to piece together what led to a fiery crash in Kerang that killed an elderly passenger.
Emergency services were called to the Murray Valley Highway, near Nancarrow Road, about 1pm on Sunday after reports a car had left the road, rolled and caught fire.
The fire was extinguished and a 76-year-old man, from Lancefield, was located deceased near the vehicle.
The driver, a man in his 70s, was taken by Ambulance Victoria to Swan Hill District Health in a stable condition with minor injuries.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said the exact circumstances were yet to be determined by major collision investigation unit detectives.
“The investigation is ongoing,” the spokesperson said.
The fire quickly spread into adjoining bushland.
Kerang Fire Brigade captain Ramon Steel said the fire burned through four hectares.
Volunteers from Kerang, Cohuna and Sandhill Lake fought the blaze, with the help of a Black Hawk helitanker that was stationed at the Kerang Aerdorome.
“The fire was going pretty hard in the bush,” Capt Steel said.
“The aerial tanker helped us bring it under control quicker which stops a lot more mopping up.
“And you have to be conscious about how many crews we expose to that sort of scene.”
The highway was closed while investigators examined the scene.
