Quilts on display

THE Grain Shed will host a display of around 100 quilts and other handmade items this Saturday in recognition of community project Hampers of Hope.

The Grain Shed gives away hampers throughout the year to families in the Swan Hill district.

Around 800 hampers of food are donated each Christmas season, with church members giving towards the project, at a cost of around $40,000.

Organisers of the quilt display, Sally Op’t Hoog and Leanne Billman, decided to use their passion for patchwork quilting to invite the community to invest in the hamper project.

All proceeds of the quilting day will go towards food for the Hampers of Hope.

The quilts will vary in composition and include modern quilts, updated takes on older styled quilts and heirloom and hand-stitched quilts.

“There will be numerous other crated items on display, including knitting, bears, and wall hangings, just to name a few,” Mrs O’pt Hoog said.

“It is also great for the community to learn about a variety of craft activities occurring locally.

“Leanne runs a quilting group each Thursday and I, along with Helen Tilbrook, run a day each term named Gather – a space for women to sit, craft, learn new skills, eat and laugh.

“On top of the display, there will be many crafters demonstrating a variety of skills needed to create a quilt.

“Visitors can see English Paper Piecing, hand piecing, hand quilting and other related skills.

“Those keen may even like to participate in some stitching.”

The display will be open between 10am and 5pm and all quilts have been created by people associated with The Grain Shed.

Mrs Op’t Hoog said everyone is welcome.

“Morning and afternoon tea, as well as a light lunch can be purchased on the day, so it is a perfect opportunity to gather some friends for a gentle outing,” she said.

The Grain Shed is located at 2 King Street, Swan Hill.
