SWAN Hill’s Catholic community is celebrating the election of Cardinal Robert F. Prevost as the 267th pope.
Taking the name Pope Leo XIV, he becomes the first American-born pontiff in history.
His election, announced on Friday, May 8, followed a swift conclave that concluded on the second day of voting.
“We were very excited to hear the Cardinals had selected a new Pope, and surprised they came to agree on a candidate so quickly,” St Mary’s Parish Priest Father James Kerr said.
“There was a sense of joy and thanksgiving on Friday when we woke to the news, and I am sure a few toasts and celebrations!
“I am confident with his emphasis on living and building Communion, it will be right at the core of his ministry as Pope.
“He is clearly a man with a missionary heart, with a concern for the poor and upholding the dignity of every person.”
Pope Leo XIV’s election marks a significant moment in the Catholic Church’s history.
Born in Chicago and later naturalised as a Peruvian citizen, he has spent much of his life in missionary work, particularly in Peru.
At 69, he is considered relatively young for a pope and is expected to lead the Church for many years.
His leadership style emphasises humility, service, and inclusivity, aligning with the reforms initiated by his predecessor, Pope Francis.
Father Kerr said that the community would be excited to see the pope in Australia in 2028.
“A special prayer might be that Pope Leo accepts our Prime Minister’s invitation to visit us here Down Under for the International Eucharistic Congress in 2028,” Fr Kerr said.
The congress is set to be held in Sydney, offering a unique opportunity for Australian Catholics to welcome the new pope.
The inauguration of Pope Leo XIV is scheduled for May 18, 2025, in a solemn ceremony at St. Peter’s Square.
The Swan Hill Catholic community are invited to join Fr Kerr in celebration and prayer at St Mary’s Parish.
“We eagerly anticipate the inauguration of Pope Leo,” Fr Kerr said.
“Anyone is welcome to join us at St Mary’s Parish in prayer for our Holy Father.”
