Annuello hall centenary

SURVIVING Annuello families are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the public hall that was the lifeblood of the old community.

Organiser Greg Plant invites everyone to the celebrations, which include an afternoon tea and barbecue dinner tomorrow and camping over the weekend.

“The reunion is a great opportunity to catch up with everyone without a funeral,” he said.

In the early 20th century, public halls around Australia hosted communities’ schools, christenings, weddings, funerals, church services and social events.

The Annuello Hall is a standing relic of the hardships of farming settlers that formed the township in 1919, and the returned World War I soldiers who battled on the land to make a living in the area.

Discussions of new purposes for the hall will take place over the reunion.

Anyone who has any information about ownership of the hall should contact Sam James at sjames@theguardian.com.au.
