Cannabis haul intercepted

NEW South Wales Police have seized more than 45 kilograms of cannabis with an estimated value of more than $700,000 in over two separate vehicle stops in Yanga last week,

The seizure came as police were conducting Opeation Furious on the Sturt highway between July 8 and 12.

It was carried out by barrier police and highway patrol.

The high-visibility operation was aiming to reduce deaths and injuies on local roads, with police conducting 420 random breath tests as part of the operation.

At about 10.10am officers stopped a grey Toyota Grand HiAce after it was allegedly speeding.

The driver then returned a drug test result positive for cannabis.

In a subsequent search of the vehicle, police located and seized 8.5 kilograms of cannabis.

e 59-year-old man was then taken to Balranald Police Station for a secondary oral fluid test.

The South Australian man was charged with the supply of a prohibited drug over indictable and under commercial quantity and possessing a prohibited drug.

He was bailed to appear at Hay Local Court in September.

The following day, traffic and Highway Patrol officers stopped a white Ford Transit van for a random breath test at about 1.40pm, before locating and seizing more than 40 kilograms of cannabis and a quantity of cash.

The 54-year-old driver was arrested and taken to Balranald Police Station where he was charged with drug offences and recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime under $5000.

The Theresa Park man appeared at Broken Hill Local Court on July 11, where he was formally refused bail to appear at Wentworth Local Court in September.

Police believe the cannabis seized has an estimated potential street value of about $740,000.
