NYAH District Primary School was alive with the excited laughter and shouts of children last Friday as the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students from six district primary schools converged for a fun activity day.
Held twice a year for more than a decade, it brings together students from Nyah District Primary School, Beverford District Primary School, Lake Boga Primary School, Woorinen District Primary School, Manangatang P-12 and Swan Hill Christian School for a morning of enjoyment.
An AFL footy clinic sat beside golf, soccer and Net Set Go as part of encouraging kids to engage in outdoor activities.
Helping the staff and volunteers were the 14 students from Swan Hill Colleges VET sport and recreation program.
Program teacher Jade Hunter said the group of Year 11 students were studying their Certificate III in VET Sport and Recreation, which was a two-year course.
“The work we are doing out here at Nyah complements the unit they are working on extremely well where they can display their coaching skills, teaching skills and session planning skills, delivering the sessions for junior students from all around the region,” Ms Hunter said.
“These kids are our accelerated kids.
“They are our top sporty kids who are involved in a lot of the community sporting teams and are quite talented kids.”
Nyah District Primary School teacher Pam Paynter said this was a great opportunity to bring the younger students together to socialise with all the other small schools.
“It’s having a range of different fun activities and getting to participate in a wide range of things as well as meet new friends, giving them new social skills and an opportunity to go outside their own school environment,” Ms Paynter said.
“The 150 students all travelled by bus, with the activities starting at 10am.
“We finished at lunchtime as some schools had further to go to return home.
“We managed to fit in six activities throughout the day for them all to participate in.
“Each year we try to include a couple of community groups.
“This year it was the CFA and the Swan Hill Regional Library’s Libby outreach van.
“In the past we have had the dietitians from the hospital; we have also had Lower Murray Water with water activities.”
