ANOTHER season’s racing wrapped up at Sonic Speedway over the weekend, with the club hosting its annual King’s Birthday double-header event on Saturday and Sunday evenings.
With strong crowds and action aplenty it was the perfect way to finish up another successful season, with club president Hayden Glare telling The Guardian that despite the rain on Sunday evening threatening to put a dampener on proceedings, the club still managed to bring its 2023-24 year to a close.
“We’ve had a really good season and to be honest we’re keen for another one,” Glare said.
“I think everyone at the club is already looking forward to next year.
“We had pretty good numbers throughout all the fields and it turned out to be a really good weekend.
“Sunday night was a bit hit and miss with the rain, which was unexpected, but we managed to get all the finals out of the way and everyone was happy.
“The rain affected the track a little bit.
“We had about an hour to get everything up and running again, but we managed to get all the finals run.”
Scott Bull was one local who was pleased Sunday night’s finals took place, with the Swan Hill club driver taking out the final of the VSC Sport Sedansafter also winning three of the 12 heats on offer in the category across the weekend.
Zoey Salau was another who tasted victory in the Sport Sedans category, also winning three heats across the weekend, while Josh Beattie made it seven wins in the category for the local drivers, winning the sixth heat on Saturday night.
While Glare’s racing ended prematurely just three laps into the first race on Saturday, he said he was looking forward to a big five months of preparation for Sonic Speedway, with the club’s first event of the new season to take place in November.
“We have a few months to get everything up to scratch and go over all the equipment and make sure we’re all good to go again,” Glare said.
“We have a pretty big program for next season, including a big title for the standard saloons which will be really good to watch.
“We still have to maintain the premises over the next five months so it doesn’t really stop, which is good because once speedway’s in your blood, you can’t get it out.”
