MURRAY DOWNS LADIES
OLIVE Spitty took out her third consecutive ladies’ championship title at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday.
Olive’s scores of 73, 80 and 79 took out the title by 17 shots ahead of Lynne Bishop.
In B Grade, Shelley Wilkins’ three-round total of 285 won her the Hazel Holt Memorial trophy, with Rhonda Barrow (287) finishing runner-up.
In a special twist, the C and D grade titleholders were a mother-daughter combination, with Jenny Lynas proving she is a special occasion player by taking out the C Grade title. She previously won in 2020, 2022 and 2023.
Her three-round total this year was 307, with Jenice Krahnert finishing runner-up on 320.
The Kennedy’s Showcase Jewellers D Grade champion is Tamika Hogan, who shot scores of 110, 109 and 105 after taking up golf this year.
The handicap sections were won by 11-year-old Mabel Spitty with 214 in A Grade, Eilleen Willox with a score of 222 in B grade, Jenny Lynas with a score of 217 in C grade and Tamika Hogan with 213 in D grade.
Tamika was also awarded the Jess Petzke Memorial trophy for the best nett score across all grades.
The best score of the day for the final round on Wednesday was posted by Di Martin, who finished with 87-18-69, while the runner up in A grade was Val Hedwards (17) with 71.
In the B Grade competition, Eileen Willox (25) with 71 and Rosie Ficarra (24) with 74 were successful, while the C Grade winners were Sally Fearn (35) 69 and Jenny Lynas (30) 70.
Lynne Bishop, Chris Warburton, Jo Watts and Kathy Parkinson hit the most accurate shots to the par-threes to win the nearest the pin prizes, while Julie Overall and Cathy Darby both scored a 71 net to lead the ball pool, ahead of Jo Watts and Cheryl Delmenico, both with 72 net.
On Saturday, a stroke and net four-ball was on the agenda, with Joan Foster and Claris Bourne proving to be the most successful pairing with a 65 net score, while Mag Kiley and Glenda Coulter (67 net) took out second place on a count back ahead of Sue Davis and Gaye Legudi.
The club extends condolences to the family of Bev Merritt.
Bev was a long-time member of both the Donnington and Murray Downs Golf clubs, having served on both committees.
Although Bev had not played golf for a few years, she maintained a keen interest in the club and her golfing friends.
LAKESIDE LADIES
Apart from needing some rain, Royal Lakeside was in fabulous condition for the first round of the ladies championships, with the new mower trimming the fairways to perfection and the sands nicely raked.
Mandy Male (10) made the most of the conditions with a 78, nett 68 and 22 putts to win the day, with Sue Notting (26) 96, nett 70 was the runner up and Jean Youl (19) with 91, nett 72, third.
The nearest the pins were won by Mandy on the 3rd and 7th, Jean on the 12th and Joan Foster on the 18th, while gobblers were the order of the day, with Laurel Dewhurst, Jean, Joan and Mandy on the 2nd, while Mandy Ackland also had one on the 5th and Deanne Free on the 3rd and 10th.
Mandy Male also had a birdie on the 17th hole.
The men’s championships start on Sunday and we are all hoping for some rain to water the course.
NYAH WEST
On a cold day last Sunday and with a lot of members absent supporting Balranald’s sponsored tournament, Mike ‘Doc’ Moynihan (33) led the field home in the clubs stableford event, scoring 39 points, ahead of Thelma Watson (38) on 36 points and Bev Beasy (45) with 33 points.
This Sunday, the club will be conducting the Graham Wealth sponsored men’s and ladies 4BBB stableford tournament, with an assembly time of 11.30am. Phone entries in advance by contacting John Manser on 0407 311 874, which will assist in a timely tee off.
The tournament caters for both golfers with a handicap and those without, just ensure you have a playing partner when entering.
The junior golf development program will again be conducted at 9.30am on Sunday and will be finished by 11.00am due to the foregoing tournament.
