Autumn bowls carnival ready to roll

THE 58th annual Swan Hill Bowls Club autumn carnival rolls into action on Saturday, with hundreds of competitors set to take part.

The first bowl will be rolled out at 11.45am, with Mayor Stuart King to be given the honour of kicking off the carnival.

The carnival will continue all next week before it concludes on Monday, May 13.

Swan Hill Bowls Club carnival secretary Bill King said “people come from everywhere for the carnival”.

“It’s a very popular thing in Swan Hill,” King said.

“The carnival is going to be a very successful event once again this year with a lot of visitors coming from out of town.

“We’re expecting to be over the 200-competitor mark for the whole week, starting from Saturday and going through to next Monday.

“The weather is going to be very good – it’s going to be fine at all times, which is good for bowls.”

King said he and many other members of Swan Hill Bowls Club had been busy ensuring the club was ready for the autumn carnival.

“There is always a lot of work for everyone involved to have to do,” he said.

“Our greens are looking excellent – the greens staff have done an excellent job.

“We had to organise the catering and we’ve got a dinner on Saturday night for anyone who wants to come along.

“It’s getting very exciting here.”

King said the carnival was popular with local bowlers as well as the competitors who returned each year.

“People love the atmosphere in Swan Hill and the atmosphere of the carnival” he said.

“That’s what draws people back every year.

“It’s good not only for the bowls club but also for the people of the town.

“A lot of the visitors will eat out every night and be down the street getting coffees and things when they’re not here bowling.

“The caravan parks, motels and hotels will do very well throughout the week.”
