Bowls notes February 11

MURRAY DOWNS

SOCIAL bowls winners last Thursday were Darryl Barry, Matt O’Bree and Carl Fox.

Well done to Buck Lehmann and Kylie Gardiner on making it through to the semis of the Murray Valley Playing Area Mixed Pairs.

The Division 1 Weekend Pennant bowls team played last Friday night against Swan Hill with the night being a great success and our very own Murray Downs coming out on top.

Jack Attack starts next Tuesday, February 15 – team or single entries to Garry McCaig on 0413 188 261.

There will be a barbecue after bowls on Saturday for members and families to celebrate the season.

LAKE BOGA

WEDNESAY’S Social Bowls winners were Alex Jobling, Les Grey, Mary Lynas and Amber Moynihan, while the runners-up were Barrie Free, Grant Davies and Fay Atkinson. On duty next week is Max Lord.

Last Saturday, the three Lake Boga teams won all their matches. This week is our last pennant round, which will be followed by tea at 6.30pm at our clubhouse, while our division 3 team will be in the Weekend Pennant finals.

TOOLEYBUC

TOOLEYBUC played host to Racecourse 2 in Division 2 last week, with Racecourse proving why they are the top side on the ladder, as they were too strong for our team. Colin Jackson’s team was the only winning rink on the day, with a one-shot victory.

Division 4 also played at home against Murray Downs 5. Ian Hickey’s team had a win by four shots; however, Murray Downs was too strong in the other game and was the overall winner. The last of the home-and-away Saturday Pennant games will be played tomorrow, with Division 2 playing Murray Downs 2 at Murray Downs and Division 4 playing Racecourse 7 at home.

Midweek Pennant was played at home on Tuesday against Murray Downs 5 and unfortunately, it didn’t go as well as hoped. Murray Downs 5 won both rinks and took the win by 16 shots overall. Next week Midweek Pennant plays at Manangatang.

NYAH DISTRICT

IT was a hard day on the greens both on Saturday and Tuesday, with all teams winning a rink, but ultimately going down.

All teams remain the same for the final pennant round of the season, unless otherwise advised.

Sunday is our ever-popular Roy Armistead tournament, with great tucker and competition on offer with clubs from many districts represented. Extra gazebos and cooling refreshments are provided so don’t let a possible warm day put you off either playing or spectating.

Social barefoot and rookie rollers are on tonight and each fortnight of a Friday. New youngsters and social bowlers are most welcome. A gold coin-donation barbecue will follow the event.

All the best to all the teams in the finals, with a slight favouritism to the country clubs.

MURRAY VALLEY PLAYING AREA

NORM Smith (Racecourse) backed up to win his second title in the regional finals in the 60&Over Singles at Murray Downs on Sunday.

He beat the Northern District representative in the semi-final and followed up with a 21/13 victory over Bowls Sunraysia in the final.

Norm progresses to the state finals in Bendigo on February 16, where he joins 15 other winners of their respective regions.

Mark Snel and Mikaela Evans defeated their Racecourse clubmates Glenn McIntosh and Helen Frame to claim the MVPA Mixed Pairs.

They will go on to play Sunraysia, Northern District and Tyrrell to decide the Murray Mallee region representatives for state finals later in the year.

SWAN HILL

THE Inaugural Summertime Pools Pennant Shield Challenge was held at the Swan Hill Bowls Club between Swan Hill and Murray Downs Division One Teams last Friday evening, in perfect weather condition which proved to be a captivating event.

There were approximately 50 to 60 spectators, including young families who came to watch their dad or grandfather play and enjoy the atmosphere – the sausage sizzle was also very popular.

Murray Downs claimed bragging rights, earning first place on the Summertime Pools Shield, no doubt Swan Hill will be looking to up the ante for the annual challenge next time around to gain a place on the shield.

Last Saturday, Division 3, bottom of the ladder scroungers, were excited to claim a win against Racecourse 4.

Midweek pennant on Tuesday saw a win for second-placed Division 1 and a second win for Division 2 at Lake Boga, raising them a rung off the bottom of the ladder, with next Tuesday the last round of Midweek pennant.

Friday Frolic will be on again today, for all who wish to participate – you don’t have to be a regular bowler to come along and enjoy an hour of bowls.

Please have your name in by 2.30pm for a 3pm start, the jackpot is still rising.

Come in after the game to socialise, enjoy a drink and nibbles and try your luck in the raffles, non-bowlers are also welcome.

Swan Hill Bowls ‘Classic on The Murray’, 2 Bowl Triples, is on February 23 and 24, contact Brian Richardson for details on 0499 118 652.
