MURRAY DOWNS

Murray Downs social bowls was well attended last Thursday, with the winners being Garry McCaig, Noel Delmenico and David Carmichael – well done, fellas.

Also, a reminder that our presentation dinner is on tonight at the Swan Hill Club Function Room from 7pm. The Annual General Meeting is at Murray Downs Club at 7.30pm on Monday, May 2, with all members encouraged to attend.

There will be a tournament at Murray Downs on Thursday May 5, with a 12.30pm start. Team or single entries to Dawne Holland on 0402 020 996 or Carl Fox on 0429 855 260. Entries close at 5pm on Wednesday, May 4.

RACECOURSE

Last Saturday our club held its 50th year celebrations, with visitors coming from Melbourne, Geelong and Bendigo, among many other places and all returned to our club for the day. After the speeches and a presentation to retiring board member Richie O’Day, a ten-end game of bowls was held, with many of the visitors participating and some playing for the first time for a several years. The winners of the fun event were Norm Smith, and Allan and Dustin Spence, from Bendigo.

We held our RSL and Three Arm Bistro triples on ANZAC Day, with an excellent number of entries. The winners on the day – with three wins and 78 points – were Allan Marshman, Graeme Clark and Ernie Russell. Runners-up, with three wins and 76 points were Norm Smith, Max Renney and Marg Smith, while in third place with two wins and a draw were Noel Hender, Kevin Vivian and Don Poulton. The Club also ran a raffle, with all the proceeds going to the RSL Club, which raised $500.

The club’s next event is Tasco Triples, which will be held on Sunday, May 22 – please note a change of date.

LAKE BOGA

The two-day classic was a great two days with 72 players competing, with the winners comprised of a composite team of Brodie Harker from Essendon, Glen Scott, from Euston, and Matt O’Bree, of Murray Downs. Runners-up were Barrie Ansett and his team from the Bendigo area – while third was Brendan Paley, Rod Wickham and Dallas Mathers. The fourth-placed team was Peter Bibby and his team from Cohuna Golf – with good weather making it a great two days of bowls.

Jackpot Bowls resumes this week, with the jackpot now up to $282 – names to be in before 12.30pm for 1pm start.

Our Presentation Night is next Saturday, May 7, please bring a casserole or pizza to share and contact either Nola or Ken, or put your names on the list at the clubhouse, with everyone welcome. Music will be supplied by Boh Dower.

SWAN HILL

Today our popular Friday Frolic is at the usual time of 3.00pm – please have your name entered at the club by 2.30pm to participate, with everyone most welcome.

This will be followed by a presentation to the winners of club events for season 2021-22. Stay on and enjoy a pizza and salad meal, in acknowledgement of the Club’s successful season after the interruptions of COVID-19 over the past two years – please place names on the board for catering purposes.

Swan Hill Bowls Club is preparing for their 56th annual May Autumn Carnival, starting on Saturday, May 7. Entries have been steadily coming in, with many visitors looking forward to returning to Swan Hill and enjoying our friendly hospitality and competition . Now is the time to put your team in and secure a place in your chosen event.

Well done to Alan Marshman and Graeme Clark, who teamed with Ernie Russell to win the Anzac Day bowls at Racecourse on Monday – well done, lads.

Finally, all the best to our club member Diane Millsteed, as she heads off to Bendigo next week for the finals of the Bowls Victoria State Events – she will be competing in the Champion of Champions. Our best wishes also to the other Murray Valley Division players who are competing in some of the other categories.
