MURRAY DOWNS

MURRAY Downs’ opening tournament was held recently, with 96 players participating, signifying a wonderful start to our season. Congratulations to the winners, from Sea Lake, Noel Watson, Carol Watson and Rick Stacey. Runners-up were Murray Downs’ team, Neville Martin, Pam Martin and Joe Sapuppo, with third place going to Lindsay Hein, Rod Pascoe and Alyne Fagg of Kerang.

Well done to all members who volunteered their time to make the tournament such a success, many thanks also to greenkeeper Graeme Cox on the magnificent presentation of the greens.

Thursday social bowls is still proving very popular in the cooler weather, with Mick Hollingworth winning three weeks in a row. Ladies’ day, three-bowl triples will be held on Tuesday, September 6, starting at 12.30pm, with three games of eight ends. Team or single entries to Dawne Holland on 0402 020 996, with entries to close by 5pm on September 5.

The Murray Downs Classic, sponsored by WDEA Works, will be held on September 20 and 21, with entries to close on September 18. Entries to Brian Lehmann on 0427 902 201 or Garry McCaig on 0413 188 261.

RACECOURSE

ON Sunday, August 21, the club held its Ash Roberts Homes’ Triples tournament, with visitors from Manangatang, Nyah, Swan Hill and Murray Downs. In first place, with three wins and 78 points, were John Caldwell (Murray Downs), Rex Howard (Nyah District) and Richie Doran. Runners-up, with three wins and 74 points, were Arthur Threadgold, Lyndal Taylor and Stuart Looney, while in third place, with two wins and a draw, were Glenn McIntosh, Graeme Bennett and Graeme Muir (Nyah District). The only resting toucher for the day was Mick Tempini (Murray Downs).

Wednesday’s jackpot bowls was won by Graeme Bennett and Connie Rovere (Murray Downs) with two wins and +27 shots, while the runners-up, with one win and +18 shots, were Norm Smith, Carol Smith and Stuart Looney.

Our double members’ draw and raffles are on Friday night, followed by Sharron’s tea. On Saturday, September 3, the Rob Muston Triples starts at 9.30am. All proceeds from the bowls and raffles will go to the cancer foundation.

The club’s AGM for the board is to be held on Wednesday, September 14, at 7pm.

SWAN HILL

ON Sunday, August 28, the action will be happening at Swan Hill Bowls Club, with the 2022-23 season set to get under way with the club’s official opening day tournament, sponsored by Ray White Real Estate Agents.

The weather is forecast to be a pleasant 21 degrees – perfect to be out and enjoying the great game of bowls. There is still time to get entries in to Bill King by calling 0428 324 083 or Swan Hill Bowls Club on 5032 1772 to enter the any-combination three-bowl triples. Entries close at 10am on Sunday, with play at 12.30pm – members should provide a plate of cakes or slice.

Wednesday social bowls winners this week were the team of B. Quaife, G. Clark and Rod Wardle. Play starts at 1pm on Wednesdays. Friday’s fun afternoon of Friday Frolics back in action, beginning at 3pm to be followed by activities in the clubhouse.

It is advisable on both Wednesdays and Fridays to enter names half an hour before the games’ start time. All welcome to join in and come and try out a game, with bowls available at the club.

LAKE BOGA

IN jackpot bowls results from Saturday, August 20, Jeannie Leach, Bones Smith and Terry Haw emerged as winners for the day, with Lyn Maher, Bob McIntosh and Leigh Kingsbury finishing runners-up. The jackpot to be $363 on August 27. Lucky draw prizes went to Keith Anderson, Robyn Jolly, Glen McIntosh, Mal Martin, Terry Haw and Max Renney.

Our opening day for season 2022-23 will be on Saturday, September 3, at 1pm. Names should be in by Friday, September 2, to Ken Hamill on 0408 591 256 or Rod Wickham on 0447 382 007. The competition will be any- combination fours with $600 prizemoney, sponsored by Parsons Bulk Haulage. Everyone should put their names in for a great day of bowls at Lake Boga.

On Wednesday, August 24, many bowlers braved the cold, with the winners being Evelyn Mortimar, Les Grey, Rod Dewhurst and John McCormack. The runners-up were Barb Davies, Bones Smith and Rob Ward. All members are reminded that memberships are due now for the new season.
