Bowls notes

MURRAY DOWNS

SOCIAL bowls last week was well attended, with 44 players taking part, including players from Kerang, Lake Boga, Racecourse, Swan Hill and Murray Downs who all participated. The winners were Daryl Barry, Carl Fox and Keith Burrage, with the runners-up being Peter Furnell, Pam Martin and Geoff Seton-Stewart.

The lucky strike $20 was won by Bernadette Kelly. The Ladies’ Day Tournament was held on Wednesday, with members from Racecourse, Tooleybuc, Donald, Lake Boga, Kerang, Balranald, Swan Hill, Barham and Murray Downs teams playing. Winners were Judy Wilson, Lisa Critten and Noelene Weir, with runners-up being Bernadette Kelly, Faye Merritt and Lillian Fox. Congratulations ladies and to the tournament committee for a well organised day.

The Murray Downs Classic, sponsored by WDEA Works, will be held on September 20 and 21, so players who haven’t entered yet, should contact Brian Lehmann on 0427 902 201 or Garry McCaig on 0413 188 261 before September 18.


RACECOURSE

ON Saturday, we held our annual Robert Muston Memorial Triples, with the winners from 2017 winning again. Arthur Threadgold, Neil Roberts and Kaye Roberts scored with 57 points, while runners-up, with 56 points, were Norm Smith, Ernie Russell and Marg Smith. In third place were Som Pasco (Kerang), Shane Domaille and Don Monahan (Kerang).

Jackpot bowls on Wednesday was well supported. Darryl Barry (Murray Downs), Mary Hooper and Kevin Vivian won, with two wins and +11 shots. Runners-up, with one win and +7 shots, were Peter Loughran, Dawn Doran and Ernie Russell.

The selectors have picked pennant teams for a practice match on Sunday, September 18, at 12.30pm. Players who are unable to play should let Nev Smith know.

On Sunday is the Clark’s Gift Salon Triples, starting at 12.30pm. The club also has a busload of bowlers from Geelong coming on Thursday, September 22, and 50 of our bowlers are needed to play against them. A sheet is on the wall for players to put their names on.


SWAN HILL

BOWLERS should note that there are quite a few forthcoming events on the club noticeboard for members to put their names up when you can play.

Next weekend’s practice match against Quambatook has unfortunately been cancelled.

On Wednesday, September 21, the Geelong Friendship Tour are visiting for lunch, social bowls and dinner. Social bowls will begin at 1pm and we need as many bowlers as possible to play with or against the visitors. To join in for either meal, please indicate this on the notice sheet.

Sunday, September 25, is the RSL Diggers Day Any Combination Two-Bowl Triples at 10.30am. The $75 entry fee includes lunch, morning and afternoon teas, with good prizemoney up for grabs.

This week’s social bowls winners were the team of Bill King, Alex Smith and Rod Wardle. Weather permitting, Friday Frolic will be on again today, with a 3pm start and names to be in by 2.30pm. Stay after the game for happy hour and a friendly time at the club, with all welcome, both bowlers and non-bowlers.

Membership fees for the new season are now due and need to be paid before Pennant competition starts on Saturday, October 8. Also the new fixture books have arrived and are available to financial members.


LAKE BOGA

SATURDAY, September 3, was the opening day for Lake Boga Bowls Club for season 2022-23, with more than 80 people attending and a great day of bowls for everyone. Winners were Harry Whitford, Teresa Fennell, Peter Fennell and Mick Tempini, while second place went to Greg Whitla, Bernadette Kelly, Les McPhee and Bob Napier. Third place was taken out by Brian Warren, Bones Smith, Max Lord and Ray Leach.

On Saturday, September 10, our bowlers will travel to Cohuna to compete in a social game. We still need some more players, so members who wish to play should call Rod Wickham on 0447 382 007, with players to leave the Lake Boga club at 11.30am on Saturday.

The club meeting is on next Wednesday, September 14, at 7.30pm at the bowls club, with all welcome. Please keep Tuesday, September 20, free for a social game of bowls against Geelong bowlers. On Tuesday, September 6, a ladies team played at Murray Downs in an all-women’s competition. Lyn Maher, Jeannie Leach and Shirley Swan won two games and were defeated in their third game, with Lyn Maher winning a resting touch. They won five lucky draws between them and had a very enjoyable day.

Winners for Wednesday, September 7, were Mary Lynas, Brian Fowles and Barry Free, with runners-up being Lyn Maher, Shirley Swan and Noel Hender.
