Bowls notes

MVPA

Norm Smith (Racecourse) scored a three-peat win in the 60 & Over Men’s Singles event at the Swan Hill Bowls Club last Thursday.

He defeated John Ford (Racecourse) 21/14 in the final, after earlier accounting for Les McPhee (Murray Downs) in the semi-final – while Ford beat Martin Stephens (Moulamein) to reach the final.

In the Murray Valley State Singles, Mikaela Evans (Racecourse) beat Lyndal Taylor (Manangatang) and Trish Armstrong (Tooleybuc) on her way to the final.

In the other half of the draw, Judy Wilson (Murray Downs) beat Danielle Adams (Tooleybuc) and Teresa Furnell (Murray Downs) to reach the final.

The grand final will be played on Sunday, November 27.

The men’s event is at the semi-final stage, with Norm Smith (Racecourse) and Shane Domaille (Racecourse), and Glenn McIntosh (Racecourse) and Josh Thornton (Murray Downs), set to play for the honour of competing in the grand final

The semi-finals and final will be played on Sunday, November 27.

There will be no pennant bowls this weekend or next Tuesday, due to the Victorian Open taking precedence over local competition.

MURRAY DOWNS

Unfortunately, social bowls last Thursday did not go ahead due to the wet conditions.

The men’s pairs championship round 1 will be played this afternoon at 4pm. There’s sure to be some great matches being played.

There’s no pennant tomorrow or next Tuesday, as the Victorian Open is being played. Pennant competition will resume on Saturday, November 26 and Tuesday, November 29. Our teams are all doing very well, keep up the good work.

A reminder of the Murray Downs Bowls Tournament, three bowls triples mixed combination, to be held on Sunday, November 27. Please get your teams or single entries to Dawne Holland on 0402 020 996 or call Carl Fox on 0429 855 260. Entries close at 5pm on Friday, November 25.

RACECOURSE

The Racecourse Bowls Club has had a great week on the bowling greens, with Norm Smith winning the Murray Valley 60 & Over Singles title against Racecourse’s John Ford.

On Saturday, our Division 1 Weekend Pennant team defeated Murray Downs for the first time in over three years – while on Sunday, in the Murray Valley State Singles played at the Swan Hill Bowls Club, Mikaela Evans won her way through to the final of the ladies’ singles, where she will play Murray Downs’ Judy Wilson on Sunday, November 27.

In the men’s section, Racecourse will have three players in the semi-finals. Shane Domaille defeated Ken O’Bree (Murray Downs), Glenn McIntosh defeated Buck Lehmann (Murray Downs) and Norm Smith defeated Frank Jacka (Swan Hill). The other semi-finalist is Josh Thornton from Murray Downs.

Our next tournament will be on Sunday, December 4, with the club holding the Country Hearing Clinic any combination triples.

Our Christmas party is scheduled for Saturday, December 10 – please keep this date free and put your name on the board so Sharon knows how many to cater for.

SWAN HILL

Bowlers please note there will be no Weekend Pennant tomorrow or Midweek Pennant next Tuesday, November 22 – the greens will be open for practice, social bowls and Friday Frolic however.

Weekend Pennant will resume on Saturday, November 26th and Tuesday, November 29th.

Last weekend, all three Swan Hill teams played at home, with our Division 1 side unable to hold off a forceful Lake Boga side, going down overall by just one shot.

Swan Hill won one rink, but it wasn’t quite enough to cover the other two rinks.

Swan Hill’s Division 2 team failed to take out a rink against the stronger Murray Downs, while our Division 3 side were no match for the Lake Boga No.2 team.

Midweek Pennant on Tuesday was a similar story, with neither Division 1 or 2 able to gain any points in the chilly conditions.

Brian Quaife and Ken Grey took out the prize at social bowls on Wednesday.

With no bowls tomorrow, there should be an enthusiastic number roll up for Friday Frolic at 3pm.

Be sure and have your name in by 2.30pm, with the jackpot to rise above $100, you need to play for a chance to win.

Stay on after the game, enjoy happy hour and try your luck in the raffles, you do not have to be an experienced bowler to take part and all are welcome to join in.

Last Sunday saw some excellent games played in the State Singles, with the finals to be played at the Swan Hill Bowls Club on Sunday, November 27.

LAKE BOGA

Wednesday’s social bowls winners were John McCormack, Les Grey, Richard Bruton and Billy King, while the runner’s-up were Greg Clifford, Nola Bruton, Ray Leach and Lyn Maher.

On duty next week is Shirley Swan. We will keep our Wednesday social bowls at a 1pm start until the weather warms up a bit more.

Both Division 1 and Division 3 had wins in Saturday’s pennant last week. As there is no pennant this weekend, we hope to get all first-round singles matches played. Please arrange your games and ask someone to mark your games.

The men’s and ladies state triples will be held at Lake Boga on Sunday, December 4 and the finals on Sunday, December 11. Entries will close on Monday, November 28.

State novice men’s and ladies will be held at Racecourse on Sunday, December 18, with entries to close on Monday, December 12.

TOOLEYBUC

For the first time this season, Tooleybuc played at home against Murray Downs 4.

It was great to have a home game after a lot of work had gone into preparing the greens and with time they will continue to improve.

Murray Downs 4 proved too strong against Tooleybuc, winning by 25 shots overall.

T.Armstrong’s rink was the only winning rink on the day, winning by five shots, while A.Adams’ rink had a close game, but went down by five shots. Murray Downs was too strong against I.Hickey’s rink.

No matches will be played tomorrow. Our next weekend pennant game will be on Saturday, November 26 against Lake Boga 2 at home.

Due to heavy rainfall received in Balranald prior to Tuesday, our Midweek Pennant fixture was played at Tooleybuc this week, in what were very cold conditions.

Scores were very close on both rinks throughout the day, however Balranald won overall by four shots.

Again, no match will be played this Tuesday. Our next midweek pennant game will be on Tuesday, November 29 against Nyah District 1 at home.

A reminder to members playing in the Club Singles to organise and play your matches as soon as possible. Good bowling to A and D.Adams, who will be playing in the Victorian Open this weekend.
