MVPA

FINALS of the MVPA State Singles were played last Sunday at the Swan Hill Bowls Club, with the Racecourse Bowls Club having an outstanding day with two stellar performances.

Mikaela Evans won her first title with a comfortable victory over the well credentialed Judy Wilson (Murray Downs).

Evans got off to a great start and held her nerve in fine style, recording a 25/10 win.

In the men’s semi-finals, Norm Smith (Racecourse) defeated Shane Domaille (Racecourse) 25/11 to cruise into the final, while Josh Thornton (Murray Downs) was pushed hard by Racecourse’s Glenn McIntosh – but Thornton’s experience told in the end, giving him a 25/17 win.

In the final, Smith started very well and built up a strong 17/9 lead, before Thornton pegged back the deficit to level the scores at 17-all, with the pair going shot for shot for the next few ends.

However, Smith got away again at the end of the match and recorded a 25/20 victory. After years of trying, this is Smith’s first Singles title.

The State Triples will be played at the Lake Boga Bowls Club on Sunday, with the draw for the women’s event seeing Judy Wilson, Teresa Furnell and Noelene Weir (Murray Downs) playing Mikaela Evans, Kylie Gardner and Helen Frame (Racecourse). As there are only two entries, this is effectively the final of the event.

The men’s fixture is as follows: Section 1 – N.Smith, G.McIntosh, G.Bennett v B.Mansbridge and team. P.Furnell, K.O’Bree, H.Whitford – bye.

Section 2 – K.Hamill, D.Jonkers, A.Everitt v P.Brook, M.O’Bree, R.Wilson. M.Snel, DJ Weaver, J.Ford – bye.

Following the sectional play, the final will then be played between the section winners, with all matches to be of 18 ends.

SWAN HILL

Bowlers were pleased to be back to playing their Pennant matches last Saturday, after no games the previous week.

Even more pleasing for Swan Hill Division 1 was having a win against Racecourse 1 and winning all three rinks.

Division 2 took out the double, by having a good win on one rink, which covered losses on the other two.

Division 3 continue to put up a brave effort despite not being quite so fortunate, winning one rink against Racecourse 3, but the other two rinks were unable to make up enough ground for a win overall.

We have some new bowlers in this team who are gaining valuable experience. Every week is another challenge, regardless of what division you play in.

Our Christmas party was a great success, with all who attended having a most enjoyable evening. President Brian would like to thank Father Christmas for coming early from the North Pole and spreading some Christmas cheer. He also thanks the busy elves that prepared the lovely meal and table settings.

Wednesday saw some dedicated social bowlers on the green, with the winning team being Alan Marshman, Brian Quaife and Damien McBeath.

Friday Frolics will be sure to attract a good field of bowlers, as the jackpot is still waiting to be cracked open. Your entry needs to be in by 2.30pm for a 3pm start.

Mick’s raffles will be on the go after the game, along with happy hour.

President’s Night is scheduled for Monday, December 19, commencing at 5pm, with Graeme Hayes Real Estate sponsoring the event.

There’ll be generous prizes on offer, with first place receiving $300, second $200 and third $100 per team. Entries to Brian Richardson, Bill King or on the sheet on the notice board.

LAKE BOGA

Last Thursday’s barefoot bowls was won by Maccas Waccas – John McCormack, Mary Lynas and Amber Moynihan – while the runner’s-up were Robyn’s Rebels of Robyn Jolley, Barry Middleton and Kevin Glen.

Wednesday’s social bowls winners were Noel Hender, Keith Anderson and Brian Fowles – and on duty next week will be Ken Hamill.

Our Christmas party is on Saturday, December 17, so please put names in for catering purposes.

Singles games are progressing well, but please play your matches as soon as possible.

TOOLEYBUC

Last Saturday, Tooleybuc played at home against Lake Boga 2 and despite our best efforts, we were unable to score a win.

J.Armstrong’s rink had a close match, going down by one on the last end, while M.King’s rink also went down by a narrow margin of just four shots.

The final result was Tooleybuc 52 to Lake Boga 69. Tomorrow, Tooleybuc play at home against Swan Hill 3.

Midweek pennant was also played at home this week against Nyah District 1 and a great day of bowls was had by both sides.

L.Fox’s rink was well down prior to lunch, but came back out with a great comeback to narrowly go down by three shots in the end.

T.Armstrong’s rink had a great tussle in their game all match and there was never much in it, resulting in a draw.

A well-deserved and fitting end to a good game of bowls. Next Tuesday’s match will be played at Lake Boga.
