MVPA

ON Sunday, husband and wife Rod and Laurel Dewhurst of Lake Boga won the men’s and ladies novice singles events.

Rod had a real battle in his final against Russell Fields (Swan Hill), finally winning 21/17. The ladies’ final was all over very quickly, with Laurel defeating Linda Gordon (Nyah District) 21/0.

The regional finals for the novice singles will be played at Murray Downs on Sunday, January 22, starting at 10am.

Clubs are reminded to get their Champion of Champions representatives’ names to Josh Thornton as soon as possible.

The closing date for entries to this competition is Monday, January 2. Matches will start on Saturday, January 7, and the finals will be played on the Sunday.

Midweek pennant will resume on January 10 and Saturday pennant will start again on January 14, following the Christmas break.

SWAN HILL

LAST Saturday was a mixed bag for Swan Hill’s three pennant teams.

Division 1 had a successful day against Nyah prior to the Christmas break, winning all three rinks.

Division 2 was not so lucky against Murray Downs 3 – even though they won two of the three rinks, they were unable to gain enough shots for an overall win.

Murray Downs 4 took home all the points, being too strong for Swan Hill’s Division 3.

Bowlers can enjoy a break from pennant until Tuesday, January 10, and Saturday, January 14.

President’s night was a relaxed, friendly evening with 14 teams of triples enjoying the pleasant conditions. The sausage sizzle was very popular.

Teams from Kerang, Lake Boga, Murray Downs, Nyah, Racecourse and Swan Hill participated.

Winners: Norm Smith, Glenn MacIntosh and Marg Smith – Racecourse.

Runners up: Rod Wickham, Peter Phelps and Anthony Shields – Lake Boga.

Equal third: Peter Furnell’s Murray Downs team and Shane Domaille’s Racecourse team.

Lucky cards winners were Ian Lawry, Kessada Smith and Kane Kendall. A light supper was served after play. President Brian thanked the sponsors Graeme Hayes Real Estate and all who contributed to the success of the evening.

Swan Hill Bowls Club’s next event will be held on New Year’s Day at night.

Two bowl any combination triples commencing at 5pm. Names to be in by 2pm.

Entries to Bill King 0428 324 083 or Swan Hill Bowls Club 5032 1772. Alternatively, enter on the club notice sheet. The entry fee is $10 per player.

Teams or single entries are accepted. Sausage sizzle from 4.30pm. Light supper after the game.

There will not be any Friday Frolic this Friday, but greens will be available for practice.

President Brian and Swan Hill bowlers wish all a happy and safe Christmas and new year, and we look forward to seeing you on the greens in 2023.

RACECOURSE

CONGRATULATIONS to Mary Hooper on winning our ladies’ Club Championship 26/24 in a very high-standard game against Kylie Gardner. This was Mary’s eighth title win.

Mick Holyoak and Robbie Hayes will be playing the men’s final tonight at 4pm. Please come along and enjoy a great game of bowls.

Jackpot bowls played on Wednesday afternoon were won by Norm Smith and Roy Jones, with two wins and +20 shots.

Runners-up, with one win and +11 shots, were Bruce Horsburgh and Don Poulton. Jackpot bowls will start next year on January 4 at 9.30am. Names in by 9am.

Our club will be closed from Saturday, December 24, to Monday, January 2.
