THE Murray Valley Playing Area starts the New Year with all the Clubs’ champions playing in the State Champion of Champio, at Murray Downs on January 7-8.

The umpires for this event are Elaine Lawry and Cecelia McCaig.

The draw for the Ladies’ event is Doreen Weaver (Moulamein) v Lyndal Taylor (Manangatang), playing at 9.30 am. At 12.30 pm Mary Hooper (Racecourse) v Diane Millsteed (Swan Hill). Thelma Watson (Nyah District) v winner of Weaver v Taylor. Wendy Murphy (Balranald) v Teresa Furnell (Murray Downs). Helen Jobling (Lake Boga) v Dannielle Adams (Tooleybuc).

RACECOURSE

Wednesday morning’s jackpot social bowls were won by Arthur Threadgold, Dawn Doran and Brian Warren with two wins and +24 shots. Runners up, with one win and +10, were David Jonkers and John Ford. Just a reminder that we start at 9.30am on a Wednesday for jackpot bowls.

Good luck to Mary Hooper and Mick Holyoak in their Champion of Champions matches played at Murray Downs on Saturday, January 7. Mick is playing at 9.30am and Mary at 12.30.

Our next tournament is Peter and Mary Hooper’s Australia Day Triples on Thursday, January 26, starting at 1pm.

Midweek pennant will start again on Tuesday, January 10, with only six games to go before finals.

SWAN HILL

Swan Hill Bowls Club New Year’s Evening tournament, sponsored by Holts Auto, was highly successful. Despite the very warm temperature, 20 teams of triples entered the event. The 60 players from Kerang, Glenroy, Lake Boga, Murray Downs, Racecourse, Moama and Swan Hill Bowls enjoyed the night.

Winners were John Ford, Arthur Threadgold (Racecourse) and Gary McGrath (Swan Hill). Norm and Marg Smith and Neville Smith (Racecourse) claimed the Runners-Up Prize, with Ray & Judy Wilson & Lisa Critten (Murray Downs) pocketing the third prize.

President Brian thanked all for coming, the tournament organisers, those who prepared the greens, sausage sizzle, supper and the bar staff.

Congratulations to our Swan Hill Bowls Club Champions for 2022/23. Diane Millsteed and Brian Mansbridge took out the honours. This is Diane’s 8th championship at Swan Hill Bowls, equalling life member Marie Shannon’s record of eight championships. The Champion of Champions will be played at Murray Downs this Saturday and Sunday. Brian plays at 9.30am and Diane at 2.30pm. We wish them all the best.

Social Bowls was played on Wednesday in cooler but windy conditions, giving those who played some practice for when pennant resumes next Tuesday and Saturday. Winners of the day were Vic Plumridge and Robin Poole.

Friday Frolic will be back on the agenda this afternoon at 3pm, names are to be in by 2.30pm. All are welcome and everyone can join in the social activities after the game.

The bowling fraternity that knew past member Lindsay Webb extend their sympathy to Lindsay’s family at his passing. Lindsay was an active bowler and member for quite a number of years.

President Brian and Swan Hill Bowlers take this opportunity to wish all fellow bowlers, a happy, healthy and safe New Year. Good bowling to all, and we look forward to seeing you around the greens in 2023.


TOOLEYBUC

Welcome all back to bowls, hopefully, everyone had a safe and happy Christmas and New Year and is feeling refreshed and ready to get back into the game. This Saturday, our Club Singles winners, Ian Hickey and Dannielle Adams, will represent themselves and the Club at the Champion of Champions to be played at Murray Downs. We wish them both well and encourage members to go along and show your support. Midweek Pennant resumes on Tuesday and will play at home against Swan Hill 2.
