Murray Downs taking it to the next level

AFTER clinching premiership glory a fortnight ago in both weekend and midweek pennant top divisions, Murray Downs will continue their season at the Murray Mallee region finals this weekend.

They will come up against the premiers of the three other divisions in Tyrrell (Birchip Grey), Northern District (Cohuna) and Sunraysia (Mildura).

Murray Downs star Josh Thornton had strong expectations if his side performed to their ability.

“If both teams play well, we should go close to winning but we’re coming up against quality opposition, so it’s just about playing at our best across the weekend,” he said.

Winners of the finals will go on to the state championships in Moama in May.

Thornton said the state championships were the ultimate goal for most clubs.

“It’s right up there for me – to win a state pennant is as big as it gets – there are less than 10 country clubs who have ever won it,” he said.

“Obviously, we have to win regionals first, but I’m burning to win one as my old club won it whilst I was overseas one year.”

Midweek pennant finalists will play on Saturday, with the weekend teams waiting until Sunday.

There will be one change to the Murray Downs weekend pennant grand final side, with Ray Halligan replacing the travelling Michael Hollingworth.
