Bowls Notes

MURRAY DOWNS

OUR tournament last Thursday was cancelled; however, social bowls were played instead.

The winners were Doug Fisher, Helen Frame and Ray Lambert. Runners-up were Carl Fox, Cath Parry and Doug Witney.

Our Midweek Pennant Division 1 team travelled to Barham last Saturday and successfully took out the Murray Mallee Region Championship.

They will now play in the State Championships in May, super effort.

A reminder of our Ladies Pairs Club Championship, which will be played on Tuesday, March 28.

RACECOURSE

CONGRATULATIONS to Norm Smith and Graeme Bennett on winning the Over 60 State Pairs at Bendigo. State Champions – a great effort and a first for this club.

On Sunday, we had our Doey’s Meats 2x4x2 Pairs tournament.

The winners, with three wins and +78 points, were Alex and Kessada Smith from Swan Hill Bowls Club.

In second place, with three wins and +76 points, were Bruce and Gail MacDonald from Nyah.

At Jackpot bowls on Wednesday, Brian Quaife, Dawn Doran, and Peter Snel were successful, with two wins and +11 shots.

With one win and +9 shots, the runners-up were Glenn McIntosh, Kevin Vivian and Tony Evans.

There will be no Jackpot bowls next Wednesday. When Jackpot bowls returns on April 5, it will revert to winter timing, with a 12.30pm start.

The final Jack Attack night bowls competition for this season was won by the Senior Citizens – Bruce Mitchell, David Heighway, Ken Barry and Kevin Glen.

The overall winners for this season were Darcy Winduss, Scott Treweek, and Jye Wilson. Jack Attack bowls will re-commence in early October.

Next Tuesday and Wednesday are our Country Care Group 2 Bowls Classic.

There is still room for a couple more teams, so be quick to enter. Phone Kevin Vivian on 0427 353 243.

There are still outstanding club events to be played.

They must be completed by Friday, April 14 – so presentations can be made at our presentation dinner on that date.

SWAN HILL

TUESDAY this week saw our Bowling Arm Classic back up and running after being in recess since 2017.

Twelve teams and players from Barham, Kerang, Racecourse, Murray Downs, Nyah, Lake Boga and Swan Hill participated. All thoroughly enjoyed the day in pleasant conditions and vowed to return next year.

The winning team to go on the honour board was Norm Smith of Racecourse, Ken Hamill of Lake Boga and Kerry Power of Murray Downs.

Runners-up were Glen McIntosh, Brian Bice and Neil Roberts from Racecourse. The Barham team of Charlie Bagg, Gary Cook and Vic Kendell took home third prize.

Best game winners to receive their entry money back were: Bill King, Ralph Dorigo (Swan Hill) and Ray Leach (Lake Boga), Racecourse ladies Val Lindsay, Mary Hooper and Helen Frame, and third game, from Swan Hill, Robin Poole, Fred Burge and Kane Kendell.

Swan Hill Bowls Club have a three-day Easter Carnival on April 7, 8 and 10.

Good Friday is any combination 3 bowl pairs, Easter Saturday is any combination 2 bowl triples and Easter Monday is any combination 3 bowl triples.

Each day starts at 12.30pm and entries close on the day of play at 10am.

Entries to Bill King on 0428324083 or 50324083, or Swan Hill Bowls Club on 50321772. Alternatively, write your names on the notice sheet, or use the entry form available at the club.

The cost per player is $10 for each event.

There were no social bowls on Wednesday, as quite a number had played in the bowling arm event on Tuesday.

Social bowls will be back on the agenda next Wednesday – names in before the 1pm start.

Last Friday, the team of Kane Kendell, Rod Wardle and John Dillon won a mini-jackpot as no one was lucky enough to take out the first draw.

This means the jackpot today will be worth a win.

Names in prior to 3pm for Friday Frolic.

Alex and Kessada Smith took home the prize vouchers from Racecourse’s 2x4x2 pairs last Sunday.

President Brian and Swan Hill Bowls members extend their sympathy to Len Wolfe’s family at the passing of Len.

Len was a dedicated bowler at Swan Hill Bowls Club for many years and also a past club champion.

LAKE BOGA

WEDNESDAY’S social bowls winners were Grant Davies, Ray Leach, Rod Dewhurst and Mary Lynas. On duty next week is Greg Clifford.

Please note that social bowls will revert to the afternoon from next week – names in by 12.30pm for a 1pm start.

Novice bowls will finish next Thursday, March 30, all welcome and supper will be supplied.

Please let Ken Hamill know on 0408 591 256 if you are not available on the night.

We still would like a few more entries for our Presidents Day Two Bowl Triples this Sunday, March 26 – contact Ken Hamill or Rod Wickham.

There will be a sausage sizzle from 12.15pm before the game.
