Bowls notes

Murray Downs

SOCIAL bowls last Thursday were won by Bob Napier, Neil Brown and Ray Lambert.

Names are to be in by noon on Thursday for a 12.30pm start.

Barefoot Bowls finished on Tuesday night after nine very successful weeks.

Thank you to all the Murray Downs members who assisted Shorty – it’s much appreciated.

The Australian Police Bowls Championships will be held at Murray Downs beginning on April 27 and ending on May 4.

Anyone who can help should get in touch with Harry Whitford or Bob Napier.

The annual general meeting will be held on May 1 at the John Mayers Pavilion at 7pm.

Please consider nominating for a position on a committee – remember, it’s about what you can do for the Murray Downs Bowls Club, not what the bowls club can do for you.

Nomination forms are due to Shorty by April 8.

The presentation night date has been altered to Friday, May 5, at 6.30pm, starting with drinks, for a 7pm dinner. People attending should put their names on the list on the noticeboard.

Last, huge congratulations to Betty and Carl Fox, who recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Racecourse

THE Country Care Classic held on March 28 and 29 was a great success, with teams coming from all around the state.

The winners, from Moama, were Barry Brennan, Glen Dorward and Jim Hogan, with 17 points and + 35 shots.

Runners-up, with 15 points and 44 shots, were Ivan Hicks (Echuca), Norm Smith and Chris Smith (City Oval Ballarat). In third place, also with 15 points but only 33 shots, were Harvey Pearce (Maryborough), Rob Hayes and Arthur Threadgold.

The seven highest game winners were: Barry Ansett (Kangaroo Flat, game 1), Bruce Horsburgh (Racecourse, game 2), Buck Lehmann (Murray Downs, game 3), Glenn McIntosh (Racecourse, game 4), Geoff Rigby (Donald Golf, game 5), Allan Spence (Marong, game 6) and Kylie Gardner (Racecourse, game 7).

The encouragement award went to Noel Watson’s (Sea Lake) team.

On President’s Day, Friday, April 14, is Elsteel and Roofing Mixed Fours. The games will start at 12.30pm.

Following the bowls, the club will hold its presentation night. Names for attendees must be on the board by Tuesday, April 11, so Sharon can concoct her awesome tea.

The annual Anzac Day tournament, sponsored by the RSL club, will start at 1pm on April 25, with an RSL service at 12.30pm before play.

Jackpot bowls will now be played on Wednesdays with a 12.30pm start.

Names should be in to Kevin Vivian by 11am.

The club will be closed on Good Friday.

Swan Hill

THERE is still time to enter for the three days of the Swan Hill Bowls Easter Carnival.

Any-combination three-bowl pairs will be played on Good Friday.

Saturday’s play will be any-combination two-bowl triples.

Easter Sunday is a day of rest, but on Monday play returns with any-combination three-bowl triples.

The cost per player is $10 for each event.

Teams and single entries are accepted.

The closing time for entries is 10am on each day of play.

Play begins at 12.30pm every day. Phone entries to Bill King on 0428 324 083 or 5032 4083, or Swan Hill Bowls Club on 5032 1772.

The proceeds from the Good Friday raffle will go to the Royal Children’s Hospital.
