MURRAY DOWNS

THE Police Games wrapped up last Thursday after a successful Australian bowls championships at Murray Downs.

A big thank you to Garry McCaig and Harry Whitford for their organisation over the seven days and to the many Murray Downs members who assisted in some way.

The club presentation night was held last Friday at the Swan Hill Club, with the following members recognised as winners of club events held during the season.

Men’s club champion: Buck Lehmann. Runner-up: Garry McCaig.

Ladies’ club champion: Teresa Furnell. Runner-up: Lisa Critten.

Men’s B Grade champion: Neil Brown. Runner-up: Garry McCaig.

Men’s 100-up champion: Chris Power. Runner-up: Kerry Power.

Mixed pairs champion: Garry and Cecilia McCaig. Runners-up: Lisa Critten and John Alderuccio.

Men’s pairs champion: Mick Hollingworth and Chris Power. Runner-up: John Alderuccio and Harry Whitford.

Ladies’ pairs champion: Teresa Furnell and Mary Johnson. Runners-up: Dawne Holland and Connie Rovere.

The Midweek Pennant team travelled to Moama for the state titles on Monday and Tuesday, with five games played over the two days.

Although the team was not successful, it was a tremendous experience to witness some of the best bowlers in the state.


SWAN HILL

THE Swan Hill Bowls Club’s 57th annual May Autumn Carnival began last Saturday, with bowlers from all parts of Victoria coming to Swan Hill for this popular event.

Deputy mayor Stuart King, performed the opening of the carnival and welcomed everyone to Swan Hill, inviting our visitors to take advantage of the many restaurants, cafes, shops and visit the local attractions while in town.

President Brian rolled the kitty, with Cr King putting down the first bowl, which finished quite close to kitty, proving that he has learnt a thing or two from his father Bill.

The weather has been rather chilly, however is on the improve and Swan Hill’s sunshine has returned over recent days.

Saturday winners

Ladies’ fours: L.Marsden (MountWaverley), C.Reynolds and G.Tudor (Truganina), E.Renney (Racecourse).

Runners-up: C.Smith, D.Doran, K.Gardner, M.Evans (Racecourse).

Third: M.Phelan, B.Dean, R.Bainbridge, W.Jenkins (Ballarat).

Men’s fours: P.Shillington, T.Jones, J.Hetherington (Ballarat), S.Tompsett (Swan Hill).

Runners-up: M.Curnow’s team (Warrnambool).

Third: J.Croft, B.Croft, R.Moore, J.Easton (Ballarat).

Sunday winners

Mixed fours: K.Hamill, J.Hamill, R.Jolly (Lake Boga), I.Lawry.

Runners-up: B.Croft, G.Ross, P.Shillington S.Croft (Ballarat).

Third: D.Sparkman, J.Meade, C.Meade K.Stowe (Ballarat).

Monday winners

Ladies’ pairs: D.Millsteed (Swan Hill), L.Aiello (Bendigo).

Runners-up: S.Croft, B.Dean (Ballarat).

Third: D.Stickcombe, M.Murray (Ballarat).

There will be no Friday Frolic today due to the carnival being in progress, but it will be back in action next Friday.


LAKE BOGA

Winners at last Saturday’s Jackpot Bowls were Ken Hamill, Ian Lawry and Peter Holland, while the runners up were Vin Ebejer, Laurel Dewhurst and Phil Parry.

As the Jackpot was not won, this week it will be $216.

All are welcome, with names to be in by 12.30pm for 1pm start, please call the club house on 5037 2301 or Ken Hamill on 0408 591 256.

Wednesdays social bowls winners were Ken Hamill, Nola Bruton, Bones Smith, Mary Lynas, with the runners up being Terry Haw, Rod Dewhurst, Jean Leach, Billy King.

On duty next week is Janet Hamill and on May 24 is Terry Haw and Lyn Maher.

Next Wednesday, May 17, at 7pm is our Annual Meeting with everyone welcome to come along and be involved in the club.

Lake Boga’s Biggest morning tea will be held at the Lake Boga Bowling Club on Monday, May 29 at 10am with a guest speaker.

Everyone is welcome to come along and support this event, with funds raised going to cancer research.
