Carnival a big hit

Bowlers from far and wide have come to Swan Hill to compete in the 57th Annual Autumn Bowls Carnival.

First held in 1966, it draws bowlers from across the state to take part in the festivities.

Carnival secretary Bill King said the cold weather did nothing to dissuade bowlers from attending the carnival.

“The first couple of days, it was a bit cold,” he said. “But it didn’t do anything to keep them away.”

“Most of these people who come from down in the southern areas don’t worry about the weather up here, they’re just here to play bowls.”

“The carnival went very well, we got a lot of nice people from all parts of Victoria, and they’ve all really enjoyed our ten days of bowls.”

“The competitors enjoyed it immensely; they enjoyed the club’s hospitality, our bowling greens and the people they get to play with.”

Mr. King said the carnival couldn’t run as well as it does without the help of a lot of volunteer work.

“To ensure an excellent carnival, it takes all of us to put in,” he said. “The people in the kitchen, the bar staff, the ground staff, the office staff. We all play our part.”

“Everything ran very smoothly, and I want to thank all of our sponsors who sponsor every day of the carnival.”

Mr. King said his work for the 58th edition of the carnival has already begun.

“I thought attendance this year was really good,” he said. “And I think it will be great next year as well.”

“A lot of entries for next year have already gone out, and I’ll be receiving them for the next 11 months. I have to get them all in order by then, which takes a bit of time and effort, but I enjoy it.”
