SWAN HILL

BOWLERS enjoyed perfect weather conditions last Sunday for the Swan Hill Bowls Club’s Opening Day for the 2023-24 season, which was also combined with RSL Diggers Day.

Eighteen teams of triples from Murray Downs, Gunbower, Lake Boga, Manangatang, Nyah and Swan Hill all enjoyed the pleasant conditions.

The afternoon commenced with an RSL stand-to ceremony, which was led by Vietnam veteran Ian Triplett.

President M. Balchin welcomed all and invited current ladies champion Diane Millsteed to roll the kitty, with the club’s three most senior members, Graeme Clark, Bill King and Alan Marshman, each sending down the first bowls of the day.

The nine visiting teams and the nine Swan Hill teams made for competitive bowling, with three Murray Downs teams taking home the prizemoney.

The winning side comprised P. Furnell, M. Tempini and D. Alderuccio, while second place went to D. Ubergang, H. Whitford and C. Rovere, with K. Rowe, M. Hollingsworth and K. Power finishing third.

The three teams to receive their money back were skippered by A. Marshman from Swan Hill, D. Fisher from Murray Downs and A. Smith from Swan Hill.

Sincere thanks to the RSL for their sponsorship, and to members who supplied a plate of afternoon tea and to the ladies that served it, while the spinning wheel raised $275 for RSL Legacy.

Many thanks to everyone for your support.

The Swan Hill Bowls Club’s next tournament will be the Bowling Arm Classic, which is an honour-board event, to be held on Sunday, September 24.

All are welcome to come along to Friday Frolic today, which will commence as usual at 3pm.

It’s a great opportunity to get some practice in readiness for the upcoming pennant season, but you must have your names in by 2.30pm and be there early.

Stay around after the game and try your luck in Mick’s raffles, while enjoying a happy hour drink.

Members are also reminded about the general meeting which will take place on Thursday, September 7 at 2pm, with a reminder that membership fees are due and payable prior to pennant.

LAKE BOGA

WINNERS of last Saturday’s jackpot were Graham Clarke and Tony Evans, while the runners-up were Ken Hamill, Cath Parry and Peter Scott.

The jackpot winners were Peter Philp, Laurel Dewhurst and Barb Davies, while the only resting toucher for the day was Phil Parry.

Jackpot bowls will resume on September 9, with a barbecue lunch for all players on our final day on September 16.

Tomorrow we have our greens full for our Opening Tournament, which will commence at 12.30pm.

Wednesday’s social bowls winners were Ian Ross and Sally Meehan, while the runners-up were Peter Snell and Brian Fowles, while Ken Hamill won the 100-up final against Danny Kelly.

Ian Ross is on duty next Wednesday.

Our club has pennant practice days scheduled against Cohuna at Lake Boga on Saturday, September 23 and at Kerang Golf on Friday, September 29.
