Social day draws strong field

MURRAY DOWNS

THERE were 21 players who took part in social bowls last Thursday, the winners being Les Brook, Greg Whitla and Neville Martin, while the lucky number jackpotted to the following week.

Thanks to Bev McCartney and Mac Angus who were on duty.

The duty members for Thursday, October 5, are Ray and Judy Wilson.

The ladies’ tournament, which was held on Tuesday, was well attended, with visiting teams from Lake Boga, Nyah District, Racecourse, Tooleybuc, Kerang and Swan Hill and our Murray Downs ladies participating.

Congratulations to the Kerang team of Sonia McLeish, Carol Pay and Lorraine Ritchie who were the winners on the day with three wins and +81 shots.

The runners-up from Racecourse were Lyndal Taylor, Alannah Tayor and Helen Frame with three wins and +78 shots, which was a very close finish.

Members playing in the match on Sunday against Barham are asked to be at Murray Downs by 12.15pm.


RACECOURSE

ON WEDNESDAY, September 27, we held our ladies’ invitational mixed fours, attracting excellent entries.

The winners, with three wins and 77 points, were Lyndal Taylor, Richie Doran, Peter Scott and Noel Hender, while the runners-up, with three wins and 75 points, were Kylie Gardner, Peter Loughran, Jim Wilcox and Ian Lawry.

Tonight we have the presentation of our footy tipping competition in the form of a pie night and double members’ draw, accompanied by an extended happy hour.

The club triples draw has been done and the draw is on the board.

Round 1 is due to be played by September 11.

The Muston Memorial Day for cancer is on tomorrow, Saturday, September 30, starting at 9.30am, in a casual-dress, any-combination triples format.

Entries will close today and can be lodged with Kevin Vivian on 0427 353 243.

Bowls will be finished well before the AFL grand final starts.


SWAN HILL

FRIDAY Frolic will be on today – there’s no holiday for bowlers.

We encourage and welcome anyone who is at all interested in learning what bowls is all about to come and give it a go.

Many experienced bowlers will be happy to help you as bowls is a sport for any age and any gender.

Brian Richardson, chairperson of selectors, will be pleased to meet with anyone interested in taking up our sport with the aim of playing competition pennant.

Today is a social day but please enter your names by 2.30pm, ready to start at 3pm.

Bowls will be available for anyone wishing to give it a try.

The entry fee is $5.

Onlookers will be most welcome also, and happy hour drinks and raffles will take place in the clubhouse after the game.

The jackpot is back to zero for the second week in a row.

The lucky winners last Friday were V Plumridge, A Treble and D Canham, a visitor from Melbourne.

The Swan Hill Bowling Arm Classic last Sunday was held in very pleasant weather and an enjoyable day was had by all who played.

Visitors Alan and Jean Walters from Barwon Heads were thrilled to be here for the day.

The honour board winners were D Barry, P Furnell and H Whitford from Murray Downs, ahead of runners-up A Marshman, F Burge and V Plumridge from Swan Hill, and B Bice, N Roberts and R Doran from Racecourse who finished third.

The best game-winning teams were J Ford (Racecourse), D Millsteed (Swan Hill), along with

A and J Walters (Barwon Heads) and B Husson (Swan Hill).

The lucky cards were M Parsons, G McGrath and R Poole, and a sincere thanks goes to the women who prepared the lovely lunch and afternoon tea.

The Saturday Pennant season commences next Saturday, October 7, and B Richardson would like to see everyone at practice.


LAKE BOGA

WHAT a great day of we had bowling against the Cohuna Bowls Club last Saturday at home as 64 players honed their skills in preparation for the new pennant season.

We wish Cohuna all the best in their district’s competition this season.

The Cohuna team with the highest winning margin was D Mathers’ team, which also included J Hofman, J Read and R Ballard, 16 shots up.

The highest winning margin for the Lake Boga side was Ron Atkinson’s team of Kane Kendall, John McCormack and John Pye, with a score of plus 14.

The overall winner for the day was Cohuna with a score of +15.

Thanks to all our Lake Boga members who helped on the day and supplied afternoon tea.

We are off to Kerang Golf for another pennant pre-season practice game today and we will be very keen to win the trophy back after Kerang were too good for us last year.

A reminder to club members to be at the clubhouse at 11am today to carpool to Kerang.

The social bowls winners on Wednesday were John McCormack’s team of Helen Jobling and Ron Atkinson, with a big score of +24, while the runners up were Barry Free, Jeanie Leach and Billy King (Quambatook) with a score of +7.
